Timing Belt

I have a question about timing belts. I bought this 05 RL with 100K miles and the guy I got it from wasn't certain if this was changed or not. He had limited records, except oil changes....he seemed to take care of the car well, but is there a way to look this up in a central dbase?

Not really; especially if an independent mechanic performed the work. You should be able to tell by the condition of the belt, though.

The timing belt replacement is expensive, over $1,000. It's not the part that's expensive, it's the labor. My guess is that he's pulling your leg. I would remember shelling out that kind of money. That's well beyond the typical maintenance bill.

thx.....I did have someone look at it and they said it looked quite good, so I guess it should be fine.

I think this was a company car and this guy took it to the dealer for maintenance, I'm not certain which dealer though...if that's the case, does Acura centralize this data?

timing belt change is not required until 105K, so I would doubt that he did it early

Really? Perhaps wrongfully so, but, I was told it should be done around 80K.

Appreciate it. 5K more driving and $1K lighter in the wallet.

Only if it was done at a dealer will it be in the data base. If it was done at an independent, I would want to see a reciept. Take it to a dealer and have them look at it to tell you if its been changed. They can pull a cover and look. Most likely the owner dumped the car so they wouldn't have to dump a grand in it for the timing belt. It is expensive but you can go 100K before changing it again. That could be 2-3 years!

earlier Acura Legends were at 90,000 but this one is when it pops up on the screen which is 105,000 miles. It is really unlikely it was done. Ask the guy where he took it to have it done.

Just got my B Service completed here in San Antonio and when I picked up the vehicle the service manager recommended I consider changing the timing belt because of the age of the vehicle. It is a 2005 but only has 49100 miles in it. I am skeptical regarding this recommendation and invite any and all suggestions...especially since they want $1250 for the replacement.

some could argue this for hours but i have 2 2005's and both have not had there timing belts changed. I find honda to have very good rubber belts and will last till there expected km's or in your case miles. Just do what ever the computer tells you if your not sure or dont trust someone.

i know with my NSX they recommend every 105k OR 8 years. at 72k mine just received its 2nd timing belt due to age. I can get the RL timing belt done here for about $550-600 total.

look around for a good independent honda/acura repair shop. the parts (complete with tensioner, seals, water pump, TB, etc...) go for $390 on eBay and its only a 2-3 hour job (at $70 an hour $210 in labor plus $390 in parts is $600)

A 600-1000 is no big deal as long as it is done properly.

Just had a A12 service done today on my 05RL 89K miles. Dealer suggested belt change at 105K or 6 years. Belt only is $399.00 (with coupon) The A4 service (belt, pump, sparks, etc) was quoted at $1600.

I did the A4 on my 05TL but only paid about $1200.

I told them I'd wait for the car to tell me what to do. Dealers need service money to stay in business. Wait for the car to tell you what it needs.

Hmmm. If they recommend 105k I would think (yeah, assume, and we know what that spells) Acura considers the average driver goes 12k/year

So 105000 / 12000 = 8.75 years

So 105k or 8-9 years sounds about right.

Definitely would know if out was changed. So assume it wasn't. Plus it isn't like a mandatory fIx unless it breaks and I can't imagine it broke at 100k but them again who would have thought my engine short block would need to be replaced at 61k.now that was a shocker.

mandatory fix? ah no. It wont fix its self you as an owner need to do it. It's not like the hits 100000 and wont start till you tow it in and change it so people sometimes dont do it and just sell it off.
