Time to let it go?

Hello.
I’ve owned my Acura RL 2006 for 17 years since I bought it new. It currently has about 99k miles. I’ve worked to maintain it and make sure it runs well. Over the years I’ve replaced parts from the AC to the alternator.

I used to maintain it at the dealer but switched to a local shop that has a Acura tech. Last year it started giving the ABS/SHAWD lights so we replaced the ABS module with a used one.

This seemed to fix the problem for several months. However recently it started intermittently coming on again. Not all the time, just every once in a while.

My shop doesn’t want to try again and suggests I goto the dealer if I want to try.

So I wanted to ask for advice here.

Do you think it’s worth to try and resolve this issue twice? Or is it better to just keep the great memories and move onto another car?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Sounds like you need to find a better shop.

Find a service manual here and try to diagnose it. How old is the battery? Was the alternator you replaced oem new? or reman. Always buy oem alternators and compressors for long life. Looks like your local shop is not so good, find another one or even better DIY. 99k is nothing for RL and it looks like you maintain your cars well.

Cool this is just the type of feedback I was looking for.
I'll definitely look for a new shop and see what they say. I think because I used this last shop for so long that I became perhaps too comfortable with them.
Yes - I've always tried to pro-actively maintain it - I keep a spreadsheet for everything I've done with the car and reminders when to examine it again.
Certain things I'm ok DIY - like I replaced the outside mirror assembly, but replacing the ABS module I think is a little more than I'm comfortable doing myself.

Probably alternator related. Did u put original alternator and eta or AutoZone duralast. Those are bad an instant right after manufacturing

If you regularly change the brake fluid, then the likelihood that one of the ABS solenoids is wedged is very small. If the problem is really in the ABS module, then it can be repaired with a soldering iron and solder, but first you need diagnostics.

As an update I did more digging around and found a Acura/Honda specialty shop about 30 minutes away from me and will try there. They seem to have a good reputation: Auto Services Acton MA | Honda, Acura Car Repairs

Good, yes definitely keep the car. They don't make 'em like they used to. As previously mentioned, 99k miles is nothing for an RL, even at that age.

So I had the RL analyzed and they said it was the Yaw rate sensor.

They couldn't find a used one so I decided to go for a new Acura expensive one. All in about $1,200 to replace and warrantied.
I was also examining my annual maintenance costs - so over 16 years it's averaged to $867.04 per year including this most recent repair.

This solved the problem of the SH-AWD light coming on.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and suggestions, I really appreciated it!

Great point.
I did see lower prices for parts but I wanted to find a new trustworthy place for potential future work.
The last place I used had better prices but they weren't able to figure out the problem and basically gave up.

So at least for me I'd rather pay a bit more to make sure I support a place that can quickly and accurately solve the issues.
At least for now that seems to be the case - have to keep monitoring it though.
