Sunroof question on 07 RL

I have had my 07 RL for 2 months now and really enjoy it. I test drove all the cars in the midsize lux class and it was the best overall. Especially superior is the interior fit and finish, very luxurious. Add in Honda reliability and it was the clear best choice. One thing that is bugging me is the slotted metal post that pops up when I open the sunroof. It makes an incredible amount of noise when I ride with the sunroof open. What does it do? Can I disable it? Today I pushed it down while riding and the noise goes away. Otherwise I love the car.

It is a built in spoiler. I think it is supposed to prevent the dreaded Helmholtz resonance. A volume of air in and near an open container vibrates because of the 'springiness' of the air inside. A common example is an empty bottle: the air inside vibrates when you blow across the top. Another example is a car cabin, with a hole in it, such as a partially opened window or a sunroof. It is also has the benefit of keeping the back seat occupants from being blown away.

One way to get rid of the noise is to use the Acura air deflector, although some do not like that look. I do not have one myself, but I have heard from 1G and 2G Legend owners that it works quite well. I have no reason to doubt that it works the same way in the 2G RL by smoothing out the air flow, and by the way, covering that spoiler that makes all the wind noise.

I agree that the OEM wind deflector is terrible. I will probably remove the spring that pops it up. The better way to remove the wind buffeting is to crack one rear window down just 2-3 inches. You also get a a nice air swirl around in the cabinet with one rear window down just a tad. Note that if you open both of them, the swirling airflow stops. I know the roof mounted air deflector would also work, but I really dont like the way it looks. Very old skool looking, and not in a good way. Reminds me of the 1980's when every 3 and 5 series bimmer had one of those.

Yes, I always crack a rear window, although it is actually hard to crack it open just the right amount with the auto up down feature. And I agree with you about the roof mounted wind deflector, which is why I do not have one, and just open the window.
