Stupid Metal Thing...

I went to lunch today with the RL and noticed that some sort of rusted metal fastener that looked somewhat like a chain link had hit the passenger side fog lamp. It shattered the lens and was sitting inside the housing.

I drove to Ron Tonkin Acura in Beaverton to get a quote for the part. It was in stock and they had an opening so I waited for it. $353.15 later, the new fog light assembly was in. A majority of the labor was removing the front bumper to get to where the fog light is mounted. It's amazing how quickly things can go south and how expensive it can be to get it fixed. It took only around an hour to get it done, though.

I have to do the same thing. I inspected my foglamps last week and the passenger side one is cracked. The light works fine, it's just the housing that cracked. Dammit! When I have this repaired, I'm going to have them take off my AEM filter (it's right behind the bumper) so it can be cleaned. Really need to get this done.

When I installed new fog bulbs I went ahead and applied Expel to the lens cover. Once back on the bumper they are very clear and offer me some piece of mind.

I don't mean to preach, but everyone on this forum should really learn how to turn a wrench. Taking the bumper off is an easy 10 minutes, and you could have saved yourself a lot of cash in labor. Check out EBay for service manuals and pay the ~$80 for a copy, it's well worth it and will pay for itself.

Sorry to hear about the foglight, they are not cheap.

Having the xpel clear bra material over the lights is a good thing. One of my fogs has obviously taken a hit because the xpel is well chewed, but the glass is still intact fortunately. Without the xpel, who knows what might have happened?

Do you need two people to do it? Or can you hold it so the other side doesn't fall down...

It's easy if you have a buddy to help you hold the bumper, as others have commented on this forum. My buddies work 60-80-hour weeks like I do, so it's easier to pay someone else to do it.

As the current owner of a fragged foglight lens, I am doing two things: saving the broken glass so that I can make a pattern for some glass shop, next time, and buying $10 worth of the XPel foglight kit pieces (trim to fit the RL).

I found a 40mil 3m product at the shop that sells the XPEL, cut that and installed it over my fogs. It took a while to work all the air out, but it's invisible and now I rest a little easier knowing the lenses aren't as likely to frag.

See the link below. Best $45 I ever spent. When I had to replace the headlight on our old '98 Land Cruiser, and also when our '04 was 4 months old. The headlights on those is glass, and they cost about $400 a piece.

Got it for the RL as well. It took about a month for all the bubbles to disapate, but they did.

Interesting thing though is that they may be sensitive to the high heat of the foglamp. The film has a brownish tinge in the middle of each fog lamp. It's obvious brown from the heat, but it does come off when you wash the car.

The thickness of these is 30-mil.

With headlights costing $300 or more, even a gravel hit can be expensive. X-Pel’s DOT-approved 30-mil material is flexible enough to adhere to curved headlights, but has been tested to withstand the impact of gravel traveling at 120 mph. The pressed, polished thermoplastic vinyl is optically clear so it won't change the look of your car or reduce lighting effectiveness. Custom-cut to fit your specific make and model, Special 3M adhesive backing goes on in minutes. UV inhibitors ensure that X-Pel will remain clear even in the harshest elements. Covers both headlights. Please specify your vehicle’s year, make and model. For use with factory headlights and foglights only. 5-year warranty.

I've never broken a headlight or foglight, but good tip for those people who have their headlights broken.

I wish I'd done that. That's what I get for being too lazy.
