Steering Wheel Control Labels
Steering Wheel Control Labels
2005 RL - Is there a known problem with them getting small white spots on them? The emergency flasher on the dash has them, too. The labels are still readable, but they don't look good.
Mike,
I have an 06 and have seen about the same thing from what you describe. Seems to be on various items (trunk release button, buttons on steering wheel etc).
I recently found out (yes, after all this time) that there is a covering (like those clear plastic on electronics) on these buttons and to "fix" it they just peel the protective covering off. You might give that a try. It did look like the button was degrading or possibly "white spots" so think it may well be the same thing.
Caution would probably be in order. <g>

Now that you mention this, I recall reading that some vinyl treatments cause the clear film on these controls to yellow and loosen. I peeled and scraped (with my fingernail only) the film off the gas door and trunk buttons, but it's still a bit cold outside to be doing this.
Without the film, the icons are back to looking white and there are no more white spots. The film does go over the sides, in addition to the face, of the button which makes it a bit hard to get all the film off. This makes me think the film is supposed to be there.

almost every german car has this same issue with the black cover on All buttons. they bubble and peel off especially in extreme heat. my buddy leased a cayman and within three months, all buttons had been cleaned off of anything telling you what it does. he returned it and go another one. bmw will warranty that kinda stuff too but thats the only company i have herd to do that for customers that dont lease a vehicle. my 05 rl has the volume button cover worn off as well. kinda sucks to look at, but i got such a good price on the car, i could easily look past it
i'm confused... is there a clear film over the button? myh buttons have what you are describing - but not very badly. are you saying there is actually some kind of sticker that I can peel off and then they look brand new again?
if this is the case, why not peel off the adhesive, and then get more and stick them back on?? or am I missing something?

I don't know if I'm following, but I noticed the controls on the wheel are extremely sensitive. I let my mom borrow my car one day and now the buttons have little peck marks like a bird was attacking them! I'm guessing that came from her nails.
I too had the issue and peeled off the matte waxy coating and now the buttons are darker and more glossy. I did this over a year ago and the uncovered buttons and their labels haven't worn off since then. I had my channel up/down, volume up/down, and MID controls start to peel and I finished it off, as well as the Mode (to make the left cluster match).

My reason for starting the thread was strictly an appearance issue of these buttons, i.e., they have white spots on their surface. The buttons in my 2005 RL still work just fine, they just look like they have the measles.
