Unhappy Squeaky brakes... ugh (TSB 05-21 post #32)

I have a 2005 RL with terrible squeaky brakes . Squeak only at very low speeds. I've only have 21,000 miles and can't believe they are worn out yet.

Anybody else have this problem, or heard of any solutions?

Tell your dealer to read TSB 05-021 - Brakes: Front Brakes Rattle or Squeal At Low Speed. My '06 is going in this Friday. If you need a copy of the TSB, send me a PM with your email.

Thumbs up Breaks

I told my dealer that my breaks squeaked on my 05 RL with 49200 miles and they replaced the front & rear and turned the rotors all for free. I think a TSB was issued.

My 05 RL just squeak when you first drive it, but after a while, it goes away. Is that normal, or should I avail of the TSB as well?

I sent an email to the Acura service Dept and they indeed did say that there were issues with the original pads. He said that if it's one of the defective ones, they would replace all 4 at n/c.

Thanks for the info, you may have just saved me $$$$ and even more important, to rid my RL from that terrible squeal!!

It is probably the same problem as the TSB identifies. For the first 2-years, no squeak... lately I swear it's squeaking sitting still!!

If it squeal, see if the TSB applies. If it applies, get it done. Mine doesn't squeak all the time and when it does (it will occasionally squeal even with my foot off the brake pedal) , it isn't loud...but it is annoying.

The TSB covers 2005 VINs JH4KB16..5C000001 through JH4KB16..5C015259 and 2006 VINs JH4KB16..6C000001 through JH4KB16..5C006768.

Sent lland a pm and got the TSB. I called my local Acura and made an appointment to have my front brakes serviced per TSB 05-021. They were aware of the problem and TSB. Many thanks to lland and all responding to this thread.

If my car's VIN is not included in the TSB, does that mean that I can't avail of it even if I have the squeal?

If your VIN is not in range, it will probably be handled on a one-by-one case. If you're close to the range, you may have a better chance. Ask your dealer but he'd have to get the O.K. from Acura before starting work of he won't be reimbursed. If the part numbers on your car match the replacements, it may be a tough sell. Worth a shot...

I picked up my 05 RL today. Acura dealer replaced front rotors, Calipers, and pads. They also replaced rear calipers, pads, and resurfaced the rear rotors. No charge, all on warrenty. The guys at Superior Acura did a great job. No more squeaks. My wife is very happy, which makes me happy!

I picked min up today as well. They only did the front...new pads, new rotors, resurfaced the rotors as noted in the TSB as well. Didn't do the rears though. No noise for the ride home...

They originally did the front brakes per TSB but when they went for a test drive the rear brakes squeaked. They then decided to do the rears also. I was very pleased with the way this dealership handled this problem. Most Acura service department aren't all bad.

My 05 RL brakes started squeaking around 13K. Take it to your Acura dealership and have the brakes checked. If there is a problem other then normal wear, it should be covered under warrenty. Check your vin# in post #9 and see if your 06 RL is covered by this TSB 05-021.

Perhaps you could scan the TSB and post it here.

Thanks again for the info.

I am so happy to report that my Acura dealer followed the TSB's and replaced pads on all four wheels as well as trueing up the rotors. No more squeak and all at No-Cost

Thanks to everyone for their advice

I tried sending you a PM but it says I dont have permission which is wierd. And yes I am logged in appropriately.

Anyway, could you PM me with the TSB info please? I believe my VIN falls within the range.

Inability to PM has to do with the anti spam business rules on the forum. I cannot remember if it is 5 or 30 minimum before you can PM. neuronbob can tell you.

I keep my car in the garage and I work at home so it hardly ever gets wet. I noticed that my brakes only squeal after the car sat out in the rain. The squealing seems to happen for a day or two and then goes-away again once the brakes go without getting wet again.

I understand. I will just have to make a few posts I guess!

I checked my RL into the dealer today for the PS recall and to have a look at this brakes issue. We'll see what they say. So far they have been very responsive.

Mine started that way also, they also seemed to squeal when they were "dusty". Then, they just started to squeal at any low speed braking action. Contact your Acura dealer and they should mention the service bulletin once you mention the problem. They replaced all four on my vehicle and no more squeal!

LL, for MY 06 is the VIN range through JH4KB16...6C006768? You have a 5 in place of the 6. I checked my VIN and it's 6C0062XX so I hope I just made the cut for free brakes

The dealer did fix my front brakes on this TSB without any trouble. Replaced the pads, some spring/assembly and turned my rotors.
Today, backing out of my driveway I noticed that there is still a squeal. I might have to ask that they fix my rear brakes too I guess.

Thanks lland for a copy of the TSB. I just got new front rotors, pads, springs, the whole package under warranty for my 06 RL. Also waiting for parts for the windshield wiper TSB. Should be in sometime this week. My dealer told me that I'm the first guy making these claims. I think he BS me. Anyway, acurazine is the best info source on your car, great job guys, keep up the good work!!!

Bought my 2005 used with 38K miles. Last time in for service the dealer said that the pads will need to be replaced soon because they're down to 4/32. They do squeal when I back out of my garage but then it only gets driven every two weeks because I have a company car (free gas & maint) so I mostly drive that. It will get driven daily after May when the lease expires on my wife's 2004 TSX and we turn it back in.

Anyway, I've thought about trying to get new pads installed by the dealer under the TSB but I would have to believe that once they see the worn pads when I take it in for the service, they'll tell me that is why the brakes squeal and I'll end up paying full freight anyway.

I just got my brake squeal taken care off on my 06 yesterday. They only did the front but did not replace the rotors, just refinished. From looking at the TSB, aren't they supposed to replace the rotors too?
NYJohn, what is the windshield wiper TSP?

If they do the TSB correctly, the ordered parts should include new rotors. I believe the windshield wiper TSB is 07-009. I don't know how to send a copy. Maybe be neuronbob knows. did I just volunteer neuronbob Anyway, the TSB is about weak wipers that don't have enough down force to clean the snow off the windshield. The TSB will replace the wipers and the linkage.

my dealer performed the TSB as well, but they only replaced the rear rotors and brake pads. I used to get squeaking noises when backing up when the car was cold. It apparently fixed the problem.
