some young kid in a new M5 tried to race me

Ok, this happened to me over the weekend when I was traveling on the freeway and there was a tunnel a head of me. So I wanted to hear some of my intake and downshifted and let the VTEC kick in. All of a sudden there was a new light blue M5 on my ass. I was like, what the hell. I wasn't trying to race you. He was tailgating me (about 5 inches away from my bumper) for about 10 seconds and now I am trying to get away from him. Obviously 290 HP VS 500 HP it wasn't enough and he switched lanes and flew off and he was going more than 130 mph.

I am sure he must have thought that he was all that and so cool to be driving his dad's M5.

Stranger still are the minivans and SUVs that roll up next to me and want to race when I'm in my MR2 Spyder.

I never have understood how some people feel the need to tie their self-esteem to the power of whatever hunk of metal they happen to be driving. There's ALWAYS someone faster...and yeah, that kid probably posted a "kill" story on his M5 board. Whatever.

And the kid is probably getting owned by his fellow M5 owners for "racing" a car not even in the same class.

The difference between a porcupine and a BMW driver is that with a porcupine the pricks are on the outside.

Racing does not belong on public streets. Period.

Anyone who does anything to encourage, challenge or instigate these clueless wonders are equally small. If you do, you empower them by reacting.

The roads are too crowded, the distractions are rediculous (text messaging!?). The evolution of the automobile's capabilities has far exceeded the capabilities of most drivers. Poor drivers are no longer the rarity, they are the norm.

We are a very tolerant society, especially in driving habits. But anyone who thinks its cool to use public roads to show how big they are, send them my way. I'll show them pictures of my late wife & son who were not cool enough to get out of the way of racing wannabes.

If you want to race your vehicle, take it to the track.

Yeah, but it wasn't the doc who was racing, it was the spoiled brat kid whose pop probably didn't even know he was trying to go 130 mph in his M5 and tailgating at high speed. The doc could've been hurt! I would have considered recording a license plate for a quick call to the highway patrol.

I was not referring the doc. My apologies if it read that way.

My reference was to anyone who glorifies using public roads for this behavior.

I should have not have posted my opinion to this forum.

exactly. Racing people on public roads (or thinking you are racing them) is quite silly and a clear sign of self esteem issues.

Yah, and let's not forget that the correct form of the joke is:

"What's the difference between a porcupine and 2 lawyers in a BMW?"

/thank you, I'll be here all week, try the veal....

Why didn't the shark eat the lawyer who fell into his tank?

Thanks for the interesting comments, guys. Life is too precious to be racing on the public road. I think young kids should be banned from driving high horsepower machines....they might not be able to operate them property and responsibly.

The kid in the M5 probably thought that my RL was fast enough to race against his car...now that's a positive thinking there..

I ususally drive 65-75mph, normal commuter traffic speeds in NJ. I usually stumble on a few BMW porcupines on the NJ Turnpike or Garden State Parkway. The best is when these young twenty somethings debadge a 525i and want to "pass me" on a exit ramp or tailgate me on the highway. Either way, I let the VTEC and SH-AWD school them for a few moments and then let the mashed accelerator in the BMW play catch-up while I watch from the rear-view mirror. Kudos to VTEC....

Maybe they know we have some HP under the hood and want to test the VTEC, not sure.

Its amazing I only see this from BMW's....and the occasional Audi RS4 play some games but if I could fit a V8 in my wife's TL, the RS4 wouldn't have a chance..period.

What a bunch of OLD FARTS
A little race on an empty road now and then keeps the cobwebs out of the air intake. It is also fun. Come on live a little, its safer than skydiving and bungee jumping! The fact that the M will beat you is immaterial , the other driver might be a little less daring than you and that would put you in contention I gave one of my partners a little lesson with my manual TL, on a curvy road he simply could keep up with me on his Z06. I'm probably one of the older ones around here!

So much for "older and wiser." I sincerely hope this is all said completely tongue-in-cheek and you're not seriously advocating street-racing and being more "daring" on the same public roads on which my mother is traveling.

Seriously, if you want to compete, there are plenty of opportunities to do so *safely*. You can start by going to www.scca.org I'm pretty sure you'll find plenty of OLD FARTS that will school you a bit on how to drive fast.

But please...keep your street kills stories on clubsi.com, where there are plenty of pimply-faced ricers to be impressed by them.

RL06tech, I actually enjoy having fun with these snobby BMW drivers. The best part of it is outsmarting them when they have "faster" cars but can drive a lick.

I don't understand why some of you guys have issues with the porcupines. Come on, they're cute.

Not anymore, thanks to Tiger Woods' endorsement. My wife's getting the new 2008 Buick Enclave on Tuesday. That's a nice looking vehicle. I thought I would never buy a GM but this thing changed my mind. It's no RL, but I was definitely impressed with it. The interior is real nice too.

GM interiors have gotten better. I was very impressed witht he Saturn Sky and Aura. Again, still a ways to go, but a long way from the "Interiors by Playskool" designs that have been in GM vehicles for so long.
