Silver Pillars removal

I was hoping that someone could provide me with instructions on removing the silver pillars around the center console/ radio. Pictures would be amazing! I am getting some fierce squeaking coming from that area, and it’s driving me crazy. Thanks in advance.

you sure it's coming from the silver pillars? I thought the same, but it actually was coming from the area between the "ashtray" and the shifter. The plastic housing around the shifter pops off. I lined it with felt tape and haven't had a squeak since.

If you DO need to take off the silver thing...start at the rear of it...use a screwdriver with tape on the end of it...pry up...keep working your way forward...when you get to the slope, pry toward you and it comes off. It's daunting cause you obviously don't want to bend it...but it isn't too difficult.

edit: sorry, just realized this was for an RL. I have a 3G tl...not sure if it's the same.

You cant take it off without taking the lower leather trim pieces off first. I just did mine for the aux imput to the deck and i found some loose screws and that fixed my sounds. Probubly take you an hour to do it.

There is some helpful info here:

And to bring things full circle. The last thread is where Chas divulged he had taken his RL offroad! Gather up the pitchforks and torches....Dave Marek is not the only one I plan too visit.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I spent a few hours reading all the posts regarding squeaking, and I feel that I am pretty edumacated on RL squeak prevention. I already felted everything imaginable around the center console area, “Not an ashtray” issue has also been addressed. Yet the dreaded “squeak of death” is still haunting me.

The dealership has been of little help, so I am going to take matters into my own hands. The methodology I am planning to use is basically removing a piece at-a-time and then test driving. It’s going to take a while, but well worth it if I can kill-off this damn noise. The only area I am not quite sure how to take apart is the silver columns on the center stack. So if anyone has removed these, I would love to hear from you.

Cheers

The "silver" pieces on either side of the center console come out pretty easily. You do need to remove the plastic trim piece around the shifter first. That piece just pulls up as it is clipped in.
  • First, unscrew the shift knob.
  • Then, start from the rear of the shifter trim where it meets the dual cup holder and pull straight up, it will come out.
  • Then work your way forward, pulling up as you go. You will need to unhook the seat warmer button connectors from below to get the trim piece all the way off.
  • Once the shifter trim piece is removed, the bottom of the "silver" pillars is visible - simply pull on the bottom of the pillar, straight back towards you - they also are held in by clips and will come out pretty easily.
The pillars likely aren't the source of the squeaking. the front of the shifter trim where it meets the "not an ashtray" is unsupported from below and is known to flex and make noise. One thing to try is to buy some small felt tape and use it on the under-surface of the shifter trim piece before putting it back on. That piece is a source of a lof of squeaks in the RL.

Dwboston, thanks for those instructions. I did not realize that the only thing holding the silver columns were tabs. I got my PMP exam next Thursday, so this weekend is out of the question for my troubleshooting attempts. I will probably dive in next weekend, and try to take some pictures. In case my experience can be helpful to someone else.

Cheers
