Is shifter conversion possible

I'm not a big fan of my RL's shifter layout (too much metal) and love the Legends layout better and the question here is, can i swap my shifter with the Legends without further modifications considering that its the same vehicle with the same
dimensions.

From what I can gather from comparing the two pics, I'd imagine all that would be needed is a new shifter gate plate, knob and boot to make it look JDM, but to function like it were OEM, I'd imagine it to be a totally different story. Besides the plate, boot and knob, I'd imagine you'd need everything front the tranny housing up as it appears that the non-USDM does not use notched gates (thus the button to switch gears).

The boot does look a bit rubbery though. I'd use a black alcantara with red stitching instead.

Not only that, the "PRND" letters would be away from the driver.

If you need to read the letters then that would be the least of your problems.

In Korea, shifter looks just like the JDM one but P,R,N,D is on the left side since Korea is not an island country. I don't like RL's shifter either.

what does the location of the P,R,D,D have to do with being an island country or not?

Driver seat is on the right in Japan, New Zealand, Australlia, England, etc.
That is why PRND is on the right side of the shift as you can see from the first picture, got that?

Janghs80,
Do you mind checking with your dealer how much the entire thing cost (shifter gate plate, knob and boot). Because i want to give it a try and see if it would work.

What kind of logic is that? What you are referring to is purely coincidence. How about, for example, Taiwan? The driver's seat is on the left, dude.

Qatar, instead of trying to source the parts from Asia, you may have better luck & perhaps cheaper prices if you were to look over to Europe. Many UK businesses now ship to the states at reasonable prices. But one set back would be that the PRND would be on the right (RHD).

Remember, the RL and that shifter design only exists on this continent.

Looks like youre on your way of converting your RL into a Legend. Why dont you just do everything at once? Wheel centers, engine plastics, door sills, and trunk garnish?

But in Korea, you will need more than $70,000 (in US dollars) to buy the car according to the price listed at the website.

the reason i chose Asia is because PRND is on the left , which accommodates the US model. Some parts i do not want or need and others grow on me over time, thats why every now and then, i decide to change something that does't appeal to me any more.

Qatar. I posted this situation on the forum (Honda community in korea), but no reply yet. I guess members are not sure about the price and if it's possible to convert. I also e-mailed to hondakorea about the price for the parts. As soon as I get answer from them, I'll let you know.

Thanks man. Actually i'll just need the price for the gate plate.
I've just ordered the shifter knob and boot from Japan but didn't order the gate due to where the PRND are placed.

I pulled the trigger and placed an order for a number of items to be shipped from Japan within 30 days.
The list includes:
1- JDM headlights
2- Honda door side seal with Honda imprint
3- Amuse Full body kit
4- Mugen rear spoiler
5- JDM shifter knob and boot
6- JDM brake caliper with Honda Imprint.
My dealer has offered me free installtion for all these items, and they seem more excited about the idea than i am.
I can't wait to receive these items and mount them on. Of course the Amuse body kit comes unpainted, so i have to take it to a bodyshop.
I'll keep you updated

Am I understanding correctly that to get the proper gate to match the US vehicle the gate should come from Korea? Does the Korean vehicle have the left-pull for the manual transmission mode, as in the US?

Also, what about the slot at the upper left of the US gate - that's for the shifter/transmission release, correct? Will that be on the Korean gate? I don't see it at all on the pictured Legend gate.

I assumed it did have the manual mode. I was wondering whether it is engaged by pulling the shift lever to the left, as in the US cars, or to the right, as on the Japanese cars.

The reason to figure this out is so one knows where to get the proper shift gate!!

it is to the left. The shifter is always engaged by pulling the sifter towards the driver in all cars (to my best knowledge)

Looking at pics mdx & rdx shifters look similar to the legend. Maybe one of those could work & would be cheaper than ordering from Japan.

Missed this thread the fist time around.

Can't wait for the pix, do share when all this stuff is done. Your dealer must really love you to give you free installation on all this stuff.

How are the JDM headlights different?

First of, believe it or not, Honda offers the Legend with at least 7 different headlight functions, and the JDM is different in terms of the clear lense, as appose to amber is US model

I can't believe that the JDM Legend has been equipped with power folding mirrors since 1991. We are in 2006 and aren't even close.

Damned meddlesome U.S. government! Requiring amber turn signals on the fronts and not allowing clears.

Yep even lesser cars get that feature in Japan. My friend there has it on his old 1995 impreza. Reason is due to the tight parking in Japan.
