i just got my door reskined, and it was payed by Acura under the corrosion warranty. they has the regional Acura Rep. ok the work and i got a loaner while it was being fixed Acura knows its a common problem with our cars, cuz the seal in the door handle. the rust on the outside is only the tip of the iceburg, its alot worst inside. i saw it at the body shop.
And I have rust that I only got to see when they replaced my windshield. With the screen out they called me over and showed me that the leading edge of the roof panel was rusting. I took this picture, treated the rust and then the new windshield was installed. The car was 3 and a half years old at the time. So if you have a new windshield it may be worth checking?
I certainly hope they will do this for me - I think I noticed some under my rear door handle - not much but it grows over the time.
What I'm really curious about is the characteristic Honda rust spot of the last 20 years: the enclosed triangle at the rearmost point of the rear wheelwell that's part of the rear quarter panel. It's the point about 2/3 of the way toward of the back of the wheelwell arch, just above where the extended rear bumper takes over.
In most of the Honda and Acura models, the concavity inside the wheelwell edge usually traps mud, holding water against the metal for a long period of time until the metal surrenders. As time goes by, I'll be very interested to see if Honda engineered a solution for this car.

I was doing some touch up on chips in paint on my 2005 RL and noticed rust on passenger door under door handle. Took car into my dealer when the area rep was there, he told service rep to take some pictures of the rust and send them to their body shop. I'm waiting on a call back to see what they may do.
Acura authorized the repair of the rust spot under my passenger door handle, covered the loaner for the repair time and the repair.
They said it was a one time good will repair since the rust and corrosion warranty is expired on my 2005 with 60600 miles. Just another advantage to reading the posts on this site.

What can I say - NOT HAPPY!!! And here is why:
According to service manager acura rep has approved as a good will $500 credit towards the repair that I was quoted at 1159$...
So yeah, no loaner and 659$ out of my pocket since the car is not under warranty...
I plan to go to the regular body shop and get the estimate just to see what is the realistic price with them, as service mgr from acura told me I would have to do it there at their dealership because they have auto body that works for them (not acura body shop) but rather certified to do al the work, etc.
After regular body shop gives me an estimate (anticipate it will be less than $1159) and then once that estimate is complete, I plan to contact BBB and file a case against acura.
I am not trying to get free stuff but it is obvious it is their fault that seal of the passenger door handle was not correctly installed and they know it... Nw why would I pay 650$ for something they are responsible for.
Even if they do not fix this handle, and it stays the same, I don't care... but they will end up with the BBB case and unresolved complaint...
Hey all, I am just encountering the rust under the door handles issue too for my 2005 RL. Interestingly, I originally brought it to the attention of my service manager at the dealership. This person was the one who recommended I call Acura (Canada) to request a case / ''investigation'' be opened.
I've since gone to the local collision shop (who doubles as the Acura sole source for body work), who then forwarded his quote and images to my guy.
It sits with the manufacturer now, who I'm lead to believe will take all or a portion of the cost to fixing it. Boy I hope it works out - driver and passenger side really affected. It's a shame because the vehicle in really good shape.
I am second owner.

Yeah, I heard something about the door handle seals causing rust. I have them on both of my front doors. What I just realized is that, a couple years ago, I side swiped a small pole and scraped my driver's door. The Acura dealer body shop said that they were going to put a new door skin on it for me, but then why does this door have the worst rust around the door handles......hmmmmm.
Same rust
I drive a 2005 white RL. Noticed the rust on all 4 door handles last year. After our Chicago winter the driver side door handle is now beginning to "bubble" and rust color beginning to drip down the side of my door. How can a 60+ thousand dollar car do this?? I hope we hear something soon from Acura because I'm out of warranty.
Mine has bubbles on both sides, but it was a northern car. Starting to rust everywhere. I have decided to skip the timing belt maintenance because of this. A rusty car is worthless and not worth investment into. Will drive till she dies. The rust has ruined my enjoyment of this car. Don't buy cars from anywhere north! I learned my lesson. My Honda mechanic, whom I trust, says he cannot recommend not to do the service, but that it will likely not snap for a very long time.
So, I bought my '08 three years ago ('14), it had 60K miles on it and no rust whatsoever.
Fast forward to last spring ('16) and I notice rust under the front door handles and the rear wheel well where the bumper meets up.
In the fall, early Oct. ('16) I managed to find a body shop that was willing to tackle the problem. Fast-forward to early this spring ('17) and the rust is back, same areas (front door handles and both rear wheel wells).
I was hoping that getting it addressed last fall would've bought me a couple more years but I didn't even get through one winter before it came back.
I wash the vehicle thoroughly every week whenever possible, 2 weeks at the latest. So, it's not for lack of caring for the vehicle but this rust is annoying. I even took it to a body shop and did not attempt to try and do it myself (who knows maybe I could've done better, probably not though)
Any ideas? I don't want to drop another round of money on a body shop and have it come back again in a few months.

I know usually with the door handles, rust at the door handles on the exterior is indicative of more severe rust on the inside of the door skin. In what I've seen, usually the whole door skin gets changed.
Did you get the rubber thing around the wheel arch removed after you got the rust repaired?

I had a local body shop fix rust under the passenger door handle that spread over the last 5 years in about 3-4" diameter... they fixed it I believe without changing the skin, but old school way... rust is now bubbling under the paint again, and he just did it about 5 months ago... so he asked me to bring the car in so he can fix it free of charge. His suggestion was against door skin, because of the paint difference that would be hard to match against the rest of the car... or he can paint the whole passenger side so no one could actually tell, but I did not want that so he went old school fix... car is 11 years going on 12th so not sure I want to invest too much into it, but at the same time I do not want to drive a car with visible rust on it
so I'll keep fixing lol

Yup, the driver's side needed a patch, I believe they welded in a patch, not sure though. In any event, the rust is coming back at the same spot.
I probably should've bit the bullet and went with the more costly fix and that fix would've replaced the door skins and more than likely the rust wouldn't have come back (maybe). But I'd still have to deal with the wheel well rust. Too bad Acura didn't extend the use aluminum to the rear of the car as well. I may just take rubbing compound to get the rust stain out so that the eye doesn't catch it and start shopping around.

so I'll keep fixing lolYeah, I had my work done in the fall and here we are in the spring and it's as if the work was never done.
Back in the fall I even went to the Acura dealer trying to see if they would give me something towards the door skin repair since Acura knew about the issue, However, they wouldn't budge.
