Rotors and Brake Package recommendation

Hi All,

I'm at the point where my next maintenance on the 2006 RL is going to be rotors and brakes. I want to upgrade to something improved and proven from the factory stuff or cheapy napa stuff.

Does anyone have a recommendations for a kit or package? I need all 4 wheels.

I have Centric rotors and Akebono ceramic pads. It's working well for me as well as a few other members. Stay away from the slotted and/or drilled rotors. There is no benefit in them to a street car. It's a gimmick.

I wouldn't necessarily say "stay away" from slotted/drilled rotors, that's more of a warning than an advisory. Yes, it is correct that there is zero benefit on the street, but if you want something aesthetically different with the equivalent street performance of OEM, slotted/drilled/dimpled rotors from a good company will serve OP just fine

I'm still on the original rotors, but I replaced pads with Akebono pads like BDoggPrelude. Can't go wrong with those at all. I've used Centric rotors on my Camry, I'm fond of them because they had an anti-rust coating on the hub area. BDogg, can you confirm that the RL ones have a similar coating?

Yes, they have the anti-corrosion paint everywhere but the contact surface.

Thanks BdoggPrelude.

What specific version of the Centric rotors? There are "Plain", "High Carbon", "High Carbon Plain", etc. with prices to match the additions....$42, $66, and $90, each, respectively.

I just want to make sure I'm getting the right ones that you guys recommend. Thanks!

When I got mine they only had the one kind I think. Are you sure you're looking at 2G RL specific fitments?

I did my 2005 front rotors and pads on Saturday.
I went with Akebono ceramic pads and Raybestos high-carbon rotors with coating. On Sunday I did a mix of around town and highway driving, so far they feel very nice. Firm, smooth braking. The rotors I replaced were original and definitely causing pedal bounce pretty bad. I've used both Raybestos rotors and Akebono pads on my other cars and they've always performed well. At the end of the day I just want reliable, smooth braking that lasts.

Here is a pic of the installed rotor just before I put the new pads in:

That's too blurry to read and I'm at work so maybe somebody else can chime in. I typically go with whatever is the higher end stuff. Just make sure they have matching front and rear sets.

The top 3 are as previously described. 1st is Plain, then High Carbon, Then High Carbon Plain. All specific to the 2006RL.

Do you remember how much you paid?

The first option is a rear fitment rotor, and the last on is cryogenic treated. The middle one is the one you wanna use Unless I'm reading things wrong

Ahh, good catch....OK, so don't bother with the "Cryo" at all I guess is the conclusion.

Thanks projecktvertx and thanks ALL!

One more note, the product reviews for the Centric's aren't too good.

I found these at Rockauto:

Thoughts?

Yup yup, cryogenic treated are supercooled slowly over time, and kept that way, then reheated slowly. To my understanding, it's great for heavy duty use like track use and extend duty cycle on the rotor. I don't see the point of using it on a daily. That's just my 2 cents

I had Powerslot rotors on my Prelude. I did track that car but after about 20k miles they started developing stress cracks in them.

Guys, this kit has gotten rave reviews
http://www.autoaccessoriesgarage.com...Stop-Brake-Kit

I was looking at the Front and Rear kit for $330.00 before 15% off. Wondering if anyone can talk me out of them? I assume the 'PowerStop' is different from BDoggPrelude's 'Powerslot'?

Looks like the same one here:
http://www.thebrakeguys.com/store/20...5-p-20774.html

thoughts?

I ended up going with this from Power Stop (K4045) Front and Rear Rotor and brake kit.

Amazon.com: Power Stop (K4045) 1-Click Brake Kit: Automotive Amazon.com: Power Stop (K4045) 1-Click Brake Kit: Automotive

I actually got a killer deal at $249.95 and the mechanic only charged me $70 to install. I took it out on the highway and followed their brake-in procedure to the letter:
40mph down to 10mph 5 times in a row, then
35mph down to 5mph 5 times in a row, then
drive for at least 5 minutes (without using brakes) to allow the brakes to cool and set up.

The rotors look good and the brakes work slightly better than the oem stuff. Very happy with the price and the performance. Recommended!

ksu1018, go back to Amazon and then click "2 new from 277.91" Here's a link...not sure if it'll work for you:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=new

Looks like the coupon is gone now....but $277 is still a very good deal.

Mine was $277.72 and there was a 10% online coupon at Amazon when I purchased them 7/24/2014. Here's the receipt:

Your Coupon Savings: -$27.77
