RL Owners; ride histories.

Do not know if this has been done over here if so mods can lock, but I just saw it on the TL borad & with our older demo I thought it would be interesting.

GLI M3 & SHO were fun. GS400 was the total Package. Early GM was just what you wold expect. Amazing how hot the GLI was with 120 hp, tear drop alloys & stock recaros. & the SHO was incredible with 220 hp. amazing how much cars have changed.

True. We did have a Scorpio in the family at that time. Both the Scorpio and Merkur were great rides, especially the Merkur....but both were falling apart long before the warranty was out and parts were a huge hassel.

How is it Ford of Europcan make interesting products in Coologne & dearborn gives us crap. SHO was great, but engine had ro be sourced from Yamaha. I rolled mine 1.5 times. That was my one youthful indiscrwtion. Stoned & drunk doing 105 Thanksgiving weekend.

Oooooo, car roll call!

5/90-8/90: 1982 Honda Civic DX coupe--Totalled in multiple rollover accident after only three months of ownership. I walked away from the accident with scratches. Became permanent Honda fan as a result.

8/90-1/91: 1982 Honda Civic DX sedan--was POS as previous owner didn't care for it. Got rid of it for....

1/91-10/96: 1991 Honda Civic 4-speed coupe. Got me through med school and internship. Great car! Not fast, but did the job.

7/94-9/99: Ford Escort hatch (wife's car). Remarkably, it worked just fine.

10/96-5/01: 1996 Dodge Stratus. Strayed from Honda for a bit. BIG mistake. Both front tie rods died (luckily each died as I was pulling into my driveway), engine blew up while wifey was driving it. Traded for....

5/01-1/07 2001 Honda Accord EX I-4: Wife's ride. No issues at all.

9/99-12/01: 2000 Dodge Intrepid. Did its job, but tranny died at 625 miles of ownership. It was fixed and we had no other issues. Got rid of it a few months after the above Stratus engine explosion incident and traded for....

12/01-10/03: 2G 2002 Acura TL-P. Awesome car! Started on Acurazine (then Acura-TL.com) and eventually modded it with Comptech springs and TL-S 17" wheels. LOVED it.

10/03-9/06: 3G 2004 Acura TL. I traded up quickly because the 3G TL was head and shoulders above the old and I had to have it. It's the only car I've ever paid MSRP on. Was worth EVERY PENNY. Modded it with full A-Spec package other than steering wheel, Comptech rear sway bar, better tires, and RonJon Devotion 1pfs. Still occasionally miss her.

9/06-present: You all know. Best underappreciated car EVER. 2006 Acura RL. My best car ever. Modded it as you are all aware. Below is a pre-exhaust/lip spoiler picture.

1/07-present: 2007 Pilot--wife's current ride

Sorry this turned out so dang long.

Funny to read the progression of our lives as told by our cars. Most of us can't remember what we had for dinner yesterday but we remember every detail on our cars from 30 years ago.

Here's my life according to my cars. I decided to add some naration, although, you can almost guess where I'm at in my life by just reading the list;

Young and broke;
- 1974 Austin Marina (my first car, a real death trap!)
- 1978 Ford Mustang

Then I got a job after college and had some money
- 1983 Pontiac Trans Am (I still miss this car)

Then I go into my "grown up phase, got married and started building a life
- 1988 Subaru Legacy (wifes car)
- 1989 Chevy S10 (came in handy with our first "fixerupper" house)

Then we had three kid (in two years!), got broke again, and lived with one car.
- 1992 Dodge Caravan

Then I temporarily revolted in my mid 30's
- 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder

Then I come back to reality with 2 more minivans but keep my Spyder for "weekends"
- 2002 Honda Ody LE
- 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE

Then I find heaven (cue the music)
- 2007 Acura RL (CMBS/PAX)

Heh. No way can I remember all of them, but I'll give you the early years and a few significant ones later on:

1953 Ford Victoria 2-door flathead V-8
1956 Chevy 2-door 265cu V-8
1961 Chevy Impala 2-door 348cu V-8 (Last used car)
1965 Chevy Impala 2-door 327cu V-8 (my first new car)
1967 Pontiac GTO 400cu V-8
~
3 different Honda Accord hatchbacks in the late 70's
~
2 different Toyota Supras (one a turbo) in the 80's
~
1990 Lexus LS400
1992 Lexus LS400
~
1997(?) BMW 740i
1999-2004 BMW 540i (had 3 of those, one of which I totalled on a rainy highway in Colorado)
~
1999(?) Lexus RX300
~
2000 Dodge Dakota V-8 PU
2001 Dodge Dakota QuadCab V-8 PU
2004 Nissan Maxima
2006 Infiniti M45
2006 Lexus IS350
2006 Acura TL
2006 Acura RL (current)
2007 Acura MDX (current)

The "~'s" indicate periods where I either don't remember what I had or the car was insignificant.

Sheesh. It's been a long ride.

I noticed a proponderence of the late 80s-early 90s gti-GLi and of couese a preponderene of honda/acura products. But there have been some cool nitch cars, the xr4ti, galant vr4, A6 2.7 T I wanted one of those when I wimped out with the GS400, you could chip it & have a beast if not for Audi reliability I would have had one, the svx 6 was a true nitch car too bad subbie did not know how to market it. Then there was the classic categoty of NSX, M3, gto, 633 & 2002. just my 2cents.

Not to hijack the thread, but I've been noticing this style of TL more and more lately, and I must say it has aged very well. Maybe it is because the RL has a hint of this car's style, but the 3.2TLs I see on the road look pretty good.

I expect the RL to look as good years hence.

And what happened to the big pine tree that disappeared in the RL photo?

Hey Rob,

I do see a similarity with the RL profile. That TL model is longer and thinner, but especially in the glasshouse / side window profile the R has the same cues. Maybe its the blue color, but i see a resemblance.

Wow. The only one that made me wince was the Peugeot Turbo Diesel....

Here's most of them, I may have left out a few, and there was a bunch of overlap:

1976 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Coupe (learned to drive on Dad's car) Brown with beige velour and a beige Landau top. Called "Guernsey" because of its brown color and vacuum leak... it used to "Moo" when you adjusted the climate control.

1981 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Sedan -- GM Diesel (hand-me-down from Dad, what a POS...) The "Barfmobile." Don't ask. Also brown over beige velour with a beige Landau top. ick.

1977 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce (my first car of my own, I still dream about this car) Black over saddle leather with the most wonderful tan wool carpeting.... mmm.

1974 AMC Matador X (Free from a neighbor, drove it in Philly while at college) White with green "racing" stripes and a green vinyl interior. Was amusing to park in Philadelphia when the reverse band snapped on the tranny....

1988 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce (traded the '77 in on this, was a bad move, the '77 was much nicer) Metallic blue with saddle interior. Had power everything, and didn't have the sporty snap of the older Spider. Was considerably more reliable, though.

1980 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (the "Heap" -- leaked everything, including rust and brake fluid... had a 4" lift and 30" tires... gas was cheap then...) Green with "Woody" sides and a brown leather interior. Smelled like old carp bait and gear oil inside. Had a CB radio, which was endlessly amusing, and fitted with huge off-road lights. Caught fire...three times.

1988 Saab 9000 Turbo (fantastic car... driven by the whole family until 2 years ago, had over 140K miles on it and ran beautifully when Mom totalled it... I miss it terribly) "Desert Rose" metallic over burgundy leather.

1992 Alfa Romeo 164S Quattrofolgio (Recaro seats, factory adjustable suspension, fast as stink, and about as reliable. As stink. My father had a 164 L at the time, too, we were crazy...) Black exterior, black and red leather interior.

1994 Cadillac Eldorado ETC. Silver over dove gray leather. Bought it used. This car was really underrated... comfortable, fast, and handled well. Too bad the Northstar fell out of it about a year after I bought it.

1994 Cadillac Seville STS. Traded the dead ETC on a used STS. Not as good as the ETC... although the engine lasted a whole 2 years on this one... that is, until I had that accident. "Black Cherry" metalflake (very cool electrostatic paint process that year, looked either deep red or black depending on the angle... although the body shop couldn't get it right) over beige leather interior.

1998 SAAB 9-5 Turbo. Great car. Just fantastic... did everything well. I was going to buy it at the end of the lease, but it was pretty far upside-down at that point, and the new ones were overpriced. Frost Gray metallic (light blue-gray metalflake) over black leather with the wood package.

2003 Honda Accord Coupe, V6-Navi. I was test driving cars, was on my way out of the BMW dealership having driven a 3-series coupe. Stopped into the Honda dealer next door to drive a Pilot, as I was toying with the idea of an SUV. Saw a silver Accord Coupe on the showroom floor while I was waiting for pricing on the Pilot I'd driven. Sat in it, took it for a drive, and the rest was history. Bright Silver over black leather, with the chrome trim inside (much nicer than the fake wood).

2005 Acura RL. Lakeshore Silver over Taupe. Mom trashed the Saab, and wanted to buy my Accord because she loved it so much. So, I sold her my Accord, and leased the RL. Rattled like a squirrel cage when I drove it off the lot, and many visits to the dealer made it worse, not better. There were other problems as well.

2006 Acura RL. The dealership lobbied ACS on my behalf because of the problems with the car. Ultimately, they took my 05 RL in trade on an 06, gave me credit for everything I'd paid, and I signed a new lease on an 06 at a better term (because of the promotion at the time). No rattles, and it's a sweet ride.

I'm sure I missed a few, my family always had lots of cars around....

Next car? Don't know, but the nav system better be as good as the RL's....

That's a HUGE leap, from the RSX to the RL! How are you taking that?

As far as the relation of the 2G TL to the 2G RL, there is lore on these boards that what became the 2G RL was actually considered as a replacement for the 2G TL until Acura put its foot down and said "no". We thus ended up with a sportier 3G TL.

Does this say anything about Honda bot arttracting nomtraditional buyers into the fold. Only 3 oeole on this list had never oened a Honcda or Acura product before. However it does soeak highly to the brand loyalty. To beat a dead horse acura needs to figure out a way to bring inRL customers outside the fold.

You know, it wasn't that bad to drive despite its whopping 80hp. It was super comfortable and rode very well (much like the RL). The driver's seat was terrific (much like the RL). It also had a rather small trunk (much like the RL). You certainly didn't see too many on the road, either (kind of the like the, well you get the idea).

I rather miss seeing French cars on the road. My dream car growing up was a Citroen CX. Oooh, la la.

I would still have an RSX if I didn't need AWD, and was originally looking at an RDX-Tech, but I made the mistake of taking my G/F on the test drive....she said "I want this" and you know how that goes....

I wasn't going to have two RDXs, and the salesman mentioned I could get the RL for just a couple of grand more. So here I am.

I'm 6'8" and Acura vehicles(except the TSX) fit me nicely.

The things I miss from the RSX are:

Best 6 Speed manual transmission ever. I had no 2nd gear synchro problems

The handling was scary it was so good. I would give up before the car would.

Excellent seats, though the RL's are just as nice, and much more adjustable.

Things I don't miss about the RSX:

Needed more power, but you could say that for just about any car.

POS Michelin OEM tires(why Honda uses them I'll never know.)

Wow, pretty short list representing the last 32 years. Eight cars and I still own 3 of them! The first 3 were totals (lots of body work) that my dad and I fixed up in his autobody shop. The '70 Plymouth had custom paint and body work, with "Mopar" emblazoned in gold metalflake on the rear quarter. Looked like all the GTX and RoadRunners but had a stock 318 under the hood. Ah, memories!

1970 Plymouth Satellite hardtop
1979 Mazda 626
1981 Pontiac LeMans
1985 Ford Thunderbird
1991 Ford Explorer*
2000 Chrysler 300M
2002 Ford Thunderbird*
2005 Acura RL*

* still own
