Already? I was told end of August. Which dealer did you go through? Stevens Creek Acura or Stevens Creek Los Gatos?

so, i just got my airbag recall, supposedly they just changed out the inflator on it, i was told when they finished. I would've thought the whole airbag is all one piece?? when they were all done, i still had the same airbag steering wheel cover, so i assumed they may have not changed it out? it would have been nice to get a new and fresh airbag cover because mine is pretty worn. anyone else encounter this?

The part that's being replaced is the inflator which sits behind the airbag. It really takes a short amount of time to replace. It's a matter of removing a few clips and bolts on the steering to remove the airbag and voila.

It's the Los Gatos dealer. They told me originally it would be at least the end of summer. I go in on Friday to get my new inflator. I'm still waiting on the parts for my RDX.

Here is the procedure to remove it. It takes two Torx bolts, one on each side, to remove the airbag. I did not realize the airbag was more than one piece or could be disassembled though. I had removed it three times, and I thought it was all one piece.

New inflator is installed in the RL. Took about 1 hour for them to do the job. I'm keeping the same rental while my RDX is still waiting for parts.

I'm sure the dealers won't admit it, but common sense tells me they want to take care of those rental customers first because it's costing them money every day that goes by.

Heard news story last night that 4 manufaturers are still putting potentially defective air bag equipment in cars now that might be recalled in 2-6 years according to some Senate report. Is it sensationalism or not on the news groups part I dont know but thought it interesting story and Ford and Toyata extended their recall yet again yesterday to another ~3mil vehicles.

^ tis true. Although Takata did stop manufacturing amonium nitrate inflators in March, they never specified that airbags already built were being halted from supply chains.

They are now shifting recalls to include passenger side bags. Pax side got a bit of a pass as the deaths occurred all have been to drivers. But that is a skewed statistic as a car cannot be driven by a pax only. It may not be declared yet, but the Feds are looking to have ALL amonium nitrate inflators recalled. And that may cascade into side curtain airbags, knee and seat bags. This could be a generational recall.

AND some who are choosing loaners awaiting airbag replacements for their Acura's are being loaned cars with recalled airbags. Legislation just passed to prevent cars being rented and sold without knowledge of airbag recall status.

Honda and Acura should have the latest VINs affected online June 6.

I'm nearly certain the recall on my Tundra only called out the passenger airbag.

Dealer here in nj is telling me parts are 2-3 weeks out. Stories I'm reading suggest it's a ticking bomb, need this fixed ASAP. Probably safer without any airbag at all.

I believe to date there has not been any Acura Takata airbag fatalities. My dealer just replaced mine today on my 2012 RL while it was in for oil service.

My dealer here in CT stated the the RL airbags are coming in pretty quickly now, granted we are right near the northeast distribution center, however we ordered it and it showed up with 4 days (yes, 4 days!). I was as shocked as anyone, I was thinking it would be on backorder for 6 months.

Long story short, at least call your dealer and get your order in, you might be surprised how quickly the airbag comes in.

Took about an hour to do, didn't watch.

Wow too bad you had to return that Tahoe the next day! I just got my rental today, 2016 Hyundai Sonata. I asked for something else when I heard Hyundai and he said thats all he had... other guy next to me got the Camry.

After driving it though, I am not complaining. Its surprisingly nice and FREE.

My service adviser said the part is being made specifically for each vehicle, so they are going to have the cars vin #s on them.

Most recent model airbags have the car's VIN (or portion of the VIN) encoded to the airbag airbag deployment software. The airbag is actually unique to that car and will not work if swapped to another vehicle (even the same model). Part of the NHTSA regulations require airbag deployments to be tracked (especially in failures) and Black Box data submitted for investigation. In some cases, this voids insurance pay out. Airbags have high liability quotient and NHTSA wants to assure airbag replacements are done by the manufacturer to recorded specs. Therefore the manufacturer CAN be held liable. Remove the manufacturer from the equations and you seriously lessen ability to charge liability. Honda and Acura airbags are VIN specific. The installer is responsible to 'program' the airbag for VIN specificity and verify systems checks.

It is good you like the Hyundai. You should enjoy the ride they loan you. And personally, I would hate getting a car that turned out nicer than mine, and avoid the let down when my car was returned. Every time I have a business rental, I enjoy my car much more when I return home.

Curious but when did this constraint start? I ask as one car group I belong to the folks are swapping air bags from a facelifted to a prefacelifted car which includes the steering wheel and air bag swap. Are you saying it will not deploy even though there are no indicators on the dash of an issue?

^^^

Very possible. Or the bag may work, but it is not integrated with all the car's safety mechanisms, such as seatbelt pre-tensioners.

I have not found any once source that lists which airbags are VIN coded mapped to car models. VW is one of those. There are vendors who offer services to re-code exchanged airbags.

I suspect the lack of detail as to which cars are VIN coded is intentional in attempt to discourage the practice you mention. It may be rooted by NHTSA and / or Insurance companies. Similarly they will not reveal which cars have Takata airbags (even if not on the VIN specific recall list).

If you search 'VIN programmed airbags' you will see many results. Perhaps if you include your model and model year, you may get a hit on which cars are specifically configured in this manner. Most sites I have scanned are non specific and just reference 'late mode.... Honda, VW, GM, etc.' HTH

^^thanks, good info. I always had this suspicion of some impact. my car is facelifted and didnt undergo the minor surgey but its something I was always curious about if there was some impact that wasnt identified. Granted these cars are 13-16 years old so maybe too old to matter but in any event I am not directly impacted.

@TampaRLX-SH - Good point about the rental. My car is old, but I still like it better than the brand new Hyundai. It's nice, but very boring and I can tell the difference in quality. Too bad they didn't give me the turbo version.

Thanks for the airbag info btw, that's all new info for me.

Oh fuck Avis, I hated working for them, so unprofessional and dirty.

What paperwork did you sign because I didn't have to sign anything, in fact they told me I could continue to drive my car lmao

My airbag is available for installing. As others said, Acura is rushing airbags to those who applied for a replacement vehicle.

The dealership said something odd tho:

They need the car left over as they are facing often a problem where the airbag isn't initiating. So they gotta let the car run for a while, increase it's humidity and - as weird as it sounds - massage the seat until it initiates!

Anyone heard of this before?

I don't think my dealer did this. They just removed the steering wheel airbag cover and replaced the inflator behind the actual airbag. It was a 1 hour job. That description sounds like they are purposely trying to make the airbag deploy. Wouldn't that create a huge mess? I don't get it.

It was an agreement that I wouldn't use my car as a daily while I had the rental

Probably some local technician's creativity. I gonna call some other western dealers to make sure.

But by initiating they may mean without the bag on it, just to make sure it'll initiate if need be.

but no one reported having to leave the car over and any complications. Seems like a bad dealer.

So a twist to the story. My dealer called me today and said there is a new recall for the passenger airbag on RLs. They already got the part and I'm scheduled to get it installed next Wednesday. I wasn't even aware that the passenger side had been recalled!
