Rear Differential Oil

Hi Guys, I am due for my second oil change on my 05 RL. The maintenance minder is telling me I am due for A16. The dealer is saying the 6 is for rear differential oil change. Is that normal??? The car has only 11K.

Thanks.

Anupam

It's normal. My A16 came on at about 11900 miles. Here is a previous post on the same topic. Hope it helps.

So I bring my 2005 RL, with 114,000 miles, in for rear diff oil change. A few days later I notice on the invoice that the tech used GEAR LUBE in the rear diff!! So I'm thinking it MUST be a typo or something. I called the Acura dealer to talk to the tech, but of course he's out for Christmas vacation.

Is it possible that this tech is an ABSOLUTE MORON for not using ATF-Z1?

It looks like they might owe me a new rear end.

Not a 114,000K, that would be 114 Million miles! I drive a lot, but not that much!

The car's been perfect! Only had one issue with a wind noise coming from a rear door. I love the car otherwise!

I had my rear differential fluid changed recently. The service printout shows "Fluid, ATF Z-1" and ""Washer, Drain" along with the labor. I'd be interested to know exactly what the tech put in there. Maybe they just entered the wrong code or something for whatever printed out on the sheet. The instructions for changing the differential fluid in the RL should be pretty specific as to the fluid used.

I guess I could open up the fill bolt and stick my finger in to check. Last time I stuck my finger where it didn't belong...never mind.

I have almost 30K miles on my '05 RL and have yet to receive the message to change the rear diff fluid. I read the thread that was attached. Is this interval based on the driving like the engine oil? Seems like a lot of people have had to change it under 12K miles. Should I be concerned I didn't?

Was the transmission service at 116k your first one?

Yes for the rear diff. I've had the transmission serviced before. I try to change the fluid in the trans every 40k, regardless of the computer messages.

I have about 17K on mine and last service that popped up was B1..haven't had the '6' come up yet

Strange that the computer seems to report differently for the differential. I can understand the oil change interval notice coming from the computer analysis of driving habits, but can't imagine there's anything outside of mileage that could gauge the need to change the differential fluid.

115K...wow!
