Rear defroster is not clearing fully...

Winter is coming and it reminded me that my rear defroster is not clearing perfectly. I know there must be a part of the element that is damaged.

Should I bother trying to repair it using something like this: Frost Fighter 2100 Defroster Grid Repair Kits

Or am I better off replacing the entire glass?

I got a price from Safelight Auto Glass and it is going to cost close to $1,000 to replace the rear window! I won't be doing that.

I have used a similar product with great success. In fact I had a problem with a brand new car a few years ago, and the dealership used the same type of repair. I never had a problem with it for the life of the car.

I assume you already know the procedure to locate the break in the conductor.

I know how to check if the break can be seen but I am not positive how to check if it isn't visual. I know that website makes a test light. Maybe I should order that with the kit?

It's really quite simple to find the break using either an inexpensive voltmeter ( if you already have one), or the test lamp which you could order from the web site you linked to. The web site also gives a description of the test procedure. A quick search of YouTube for "repair rear window defroster" returned literally dozens of good YouTube videos which can help.

The procedure is simple, and the repair makes the grid as good as original. This is definitely the way to go compared to replacing the window.
