Rattling noise on acceleration (low rpm)
hi all,
i've recently had an issue which i need help for.. I discovered some days back that when i drive my 05 acura rl,on accelerating especially on high gear on low speed btw 1 & 2 rpm,it makes a cranking/rattling sound and fades away after 2 rpm.
It really has bothered me and i need to know if any1 has experienced such with the acura RL 05 models up..
Thnx

I have a few rattles here and there kinda annoying at times. Just turn the radio up and ignore it! Remember it's a 7 year old car 50k or not it'll develop it's rattles and quirks. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

i've tried to listen from sounds in d heat shield, and i cant sat. Also,i looked up other forums and saw that it could be the timing belt area or wheel bearings. I dnt know what to do...

I had a weird low pitch hmm and vibrate type noise, it's since disappeared when I installed my pcds, I suspected axle heat shield so I left it off as well as a few other unnecessary heat shields, I also got some extra well needed weight savings and probably gained some real HP from it too!

OP, we need more info to accurately diagnose. Where does the sound come from? What does the rattle sound like, metal, plastic, or is it possibly an interior rattle?

This is what my noise is like!:
I have an 05 with 101,000 miles. The whining or whistling just started about 3000 miles ago. It startsa bout 44 mph after car is warmed up. Continues until I am back down to about 35 mph. It doesnt stop, get louder, or quieter on increasing speeds. Continues in neutral at same speeds. The sound is more like the sound of a loose belt (high pitched whistle), just not rpm related. Unfortunatley, I am not under the class action suit on the odometer increase that would extend warranty to 105k. I have taken it to a local Japanese car Shop for diagnostics, but they couldnt hear it to well. I will take it to dealer for next oil change and get their opinion. I have heard temperature has an effect (below 50) but it occurs on mine at 75 degrees. Any other high mileage RLs? What should I expect. I love the car, not the cost to repair.

Now that I have redone my exhaust I am hearing this metallic rattling sound exactaly as the OP has described...I have a feeling it may be the heat shields. Are these heat-shields necessary?

So why wasn't I hearing this sound before I had redone my exhaust? Is it because there wasn't as much flow through the converter?

I had that. It took me some time to figure out what was causing the noise. It turns out that the driver side brake dust shield edge was the cause of the problem. I pushed the top side edge of the shield away from the rotor and the problem was solved. Give it a try and see if that solves your problem.

If anyone else is hearing this rattle on low rev acceleration, next time your car is on a lift, tap the exhaust header pipe where they come together....if it rattles upon tap with a hammer what has happened is the baffle welded to the inside of your exhaust manifold has rusted loose.
This is a common issue with both Honda's and Acura's. They add the baffle to provide a "throatier" sound, but they end up falling apart and rattling in the exhaust.
When I looked to see if it was the dust shields on my front rotors or heat shield on catalytic converter, my neighbor who is a mechanic ask what I was doing and "schooled me".

Crossfitter I think that you are onto something. I also had an issue with that type of noise at lower RPM's. My issue though is on my 2001 Honda civic. Materials from the catalytic converter melted and broke loose and was pushed into my muffler. It creates a rattle inside the muffler that I can hear inside the cabin at low rpm. I had midas take the muffler off and shake out as much of the crap they could and it got rid of most of the noise. They couldn't get it all out though and I didn't want a new muffler cause it wasn't bad at all. Had to replace the cat though .
