I have been looking for spy shots of the new RL. There are none, zero, nada out there! Personally, I think it reflects that until the NSX preview, there was simply no interest in the auto media about Acura recently, and in particular about the unmarketed RL.

Also don't forget that Honda/Acura keeps things under wraps pretty well.

Also to the OP, the title on your thread is very misleading!

Yeah, I've been trying to search for a sneak peek at the upcoming RL. Nothing.

That being said, I am not holding my breath for anything amazing. Acura tends to be way conservative on the styling front. I hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling the watered down "beak" shows up in the new RL as well. If you look closely even the new NSX has the beak-like band on the grille.

But I reiterate, I hope I'm wrong.

Yeah ditto over here as recently as last night.. From the people that actually saw the new RL in person, I believe you hit the nail on the head.. The styling was relatively conservative and yes the beak is unfortunately still there but correct me if I'm wrong..
Eitherway I guess we will all find out in 4 weeks or so.. Got my ticket punched..

maybe in a few yeas I'll grab a new one as a CPO!

I'm still anxious about the pictures for the 2013, but I'm so glad that I picked up what is arguably the best year...05-08.

Sure sounds like you're right. Here's what TheTruthAboutCars said:

"Today, TTAC was treated to what might be the first look at Acura’s newest flagship.
The look of the next RL can best be described as a current TL mated with a Hyundai Genesis. The overall design is still distinctly Acura, though the rear of the car has a very strong Hoffmeister kink and an overall profile similar to the Genesis or Equus, including a very short rear deck. The taillights echo the Buick Lacrosse – while it sounds unappealing on paper, the design as a whole is not unattractive, just extremely conservative."

Acura's also been quoted as saying the car has more interior room on the same-size footprint as the current RL. That suggests the rear deck is shorter because the rear seat area is longer, much like the LaCrosse. And the Genesis-TL comparison suggests to me a GM-style hop-up over the rear wheels, which is reinforced by comparisons elsewhere to the ILX, which has that feature.

Combine all that with the likelihood of standard FWD at $50,000, the likelihood of a continued beak, and the likelihood that the car will continue to be called RL, and you have the likelihood that I've bought my last RL. I'm disappointed but not surprised. Some years from now, I look forward to some insider writing a book that tells us all who the one asshole was in Honda's top management who turned the world's most progressive mass-consumption car company into this mass turd dispenser.

Wonder how long it'll take Hyundai to figure out the mysteries of suspension tuning....

How many of us have seen an MMC RL in person and said, "Wow, they fucked that one up." To be completely honest, the 2G does not pose well. Pictures are not its friend. However, there is a charisma in person that rarely is captured on film. I am not saying that the MMC is the best looking sedan on the market. (I would probably give that to an S series or LS. 7-series included in that assessment.) However, there are much uglier cars out there and the current RL is still sharp. Much of the disgust with Acura is that they set a VERY high standard with previous models. The UA7 TL is beautiful. The fact that Acura has missed their own mark is frustrating, but they didn't hit rock bottom.

Where is FredS? He knows what I am talking about.

I have an 05' RL and it has more class than the POS pic above. In fact, and being with Acura a long time, I say "look at that TL. Sorta looks like a TSX."

And what color do you call that pic? "Dogshit brown?"

What's so damn hard about a thin headlight treatment with LEDs, a thin grill, and no beak??? The top bar of the grill of my TSX is what I hate the most beside the door handles.

I don't mind the look of the 2009-2012 RL so much. My problem with the beak on this car is that it looks stuck on and is certainly not a positive styling element. In short, it doesn't flow with the rest of the car. That's just MHO, though.

I am hoping that the new 2013 is not ugly. Given the changes to the MMC 4G TL, and the upcoming ILX and RDX, I'd say Acura has learned its lesson.

the MMC RL is not an ugly car... from the rear and sides, it looks good. i think they really made the back look cool... the front... they could have done better. they tried to stick with that big shield theme and were forced to make it fit a look rather than just make it look good... not every car in their lineup needs to look like all the others.. that is their mistake.

lets all hope the new RL looks good. my guess is that it is not going to be a car that drops jaws.. it will look nice.. but it may be a repeat of the 05-08 car... people will say it's nice but it won't generate excitement.

Acura sucks at marketing. they could add just a touch more aggressiveness to their cars, slightly bigger wheels, slightly stiffer suspension, slightly more excietment.. and tey would have cars that people get passionate about..

the new NSX will help that... they need to get that thing on the streets so people reassess Acura.

I agree with the poster who said that pictures didn't do the 2nd gen RL justice, but in person the car had a presence. I got a ton of compliments on my '06. As recently as a week or two before I traded her in for the CTS.

The poster I quoted above is right on. The sides and rear of the MMC are a nice update. The beak lookgs grafted on. It's like a designer was told...

"Hey, Acura North America has handed down this edict that all of our cars will have this 'beak' we're going to put on all of our cars. Here you go, figure out how to stick this on the RL".

In addition, Acura takes too long to update the RL. My RL was 6 years old and when looking at the current RL, even if I could stomach the beack, the interior had very few changes. It looked just like my '06. I couldn't justify starting payments all over again with a car that has the same technology (pretty much) that was offered in the fall of 2004.

I think everyone can agree they let the RL slip into oblivion for too long. I find solace and hope in the designer's quote that Acura still has the same people who are passionate about cars that made the last gen NSX, 2G RL, and 3G TL (& TL-S). He claimed Acyra spent too much time styling the insight an pushing the green thing that they lost their focus. He promised that the excitement would come back, that Honda could show us THEY are still excited about cars. I am not putting all of my eggs in his basket, but I really truly hope what he said happens and means what we way it to mean.

They have already taken a step forward with their new drive trains.

I am the owner of a 2012 SH-AWD TL and I must say I am in love with this driving machine. I am also aware that several people really dislike the current styling cues of the Acuras as of late but to be honest, the MMC of the TL, the ILX, the RDX and the NSX do give me hope as far as design direction. Sure, the shield is still there but in my opinion, much better integrated than before....the biggest problem is that people have learned to hate this grill and now, no matter how they try and improve on it, it will never be accepted..PERIOD. They almost need to come out with something 100% different in order for people to stop bashing the grill. For me, I never was againt the shield altogether...in fact, I would argue that the grill of the 2009-2011 TSX was better than that of the one on the 2012. On the TL, I didn't like the pre-MMC grill but sure like this one now.

In any event, I am dying to see the new RL and we only have a few more weeks to go. This will give me a good idea of the direction the TL may take when it gets overhauled for the 2014 FMC. I never keep my cars for more than 2-3 years which will coincide with 1 year after the new generation of RL with its new SH-AWD system out and plenty of chance to work out any kinks.

While we wait for the auto show, please find another link for those who have not read this link:

It doesn't matter what they do, there will be plenty of haters. Like you said, so many people are so butt hurt about the 4G TL, you can't even reason with them.

The headlight pic is titled "MD_X_concept" in the URL. I wondered the same thing. I highly doubt it since they said they aren't allowed to release pics.

My butt still hurt about the 4G TL. The exterior feels like a shell that can be remove/replace with another shell to make it a new car. Sorta like NASCAR car or one of those electric toy car (Tyco) that goes around the track. However, I love and enjoy driving it.

I can't wait for 3G RL. Love the specs so far, but it looks like I don't think I can afford it.
