Oil Filters
I am coming up on my next oil change and have used up my oil filters I picked up at the Acura dealer when I bought the car.
Does a Honda oil filter fit? Or is the Acura something special? The Honda dealer is not far from where I do business.

My old Honda Pilot had the same filter as my RL. Get the Part # from Acura and call your Honda Dealer. I have heard of Honda dealers changing the oil in Acuras without issue. I bought some filters online, some GTX oil on sale and took it to my Acura dealer who charged $20 for the oil change so I saved about 2 cents! If a change is all you need then any lube joint can do it. If they don't reset the minder then it's easy to reset it yourself.

when I was under CPO and got oil changes for free, my acura dealer was using honda oil filters. In fact, if you go there to buy a filter from them, it says Honda on it. Now that I am doing them myself, I go to walmart and buy a fram filter for $3.

Missing my
Christopher, for what it's worth I have always liked Mobil 1 filters as an alternative to OEM. I have some extra OEM filters that I am using until I run out but I will be be back on Mobil 1 once they're gone. There was a great review on oil filters I read a few years back but I can't find the link right now. The Mobil 1 was rated #1...

How do you rate an oil filter anyway? Wonder what the criteria are? Hard to believe any name brand oil filter would perform any differently over a 3-5k mile period.

Missing my
It may not over a 3-5k period. I don't know and I don't have the engineering expertise to reason through it. However, it seems reasonable that longer use would create room for superiority between brands.

Mobil 1 filters is all I will ever use on an Alfa. The side wall is thicker and won't blow out even at 100 psi. The filter material is supposedly better than conventional paper. I don't mind paying the extra for the filter for what it does. I might just opt for some more Mobil1 filters this time around...although some one really gave me a nice offer on some factory filters.

Has anyone here had an engine oil filter blow out? Has anyone here had premature engine failure from not changing the oil until 6K or 10K miles? There are millions of people around the country who change their oil at 10K at the local Jiffylube (or equivilent) and have lots of problems with their older cars but how many of those problems relate to the frequency of oil change or the type of oil?
40 years ago when most of the engine oil myths were generated it may have been an issue but modern engines with modern oils have made the point mute. That is why Honda/Acura have a minder and it indicates, usually, around 7500 - 10K miles between oil changes.
Nowadays you can check your radiator about as often as you check your oil. If you change oil prematurely then the main benefit is the raise in oil company profits.

I follow the mid in the RL, but for my other cars, it's once a year or 5k miles, whichever comes first. I tow with my truck so that gets changed a little more often.

I use the Acura minder on the dash board to let me know when to change the oil. Makes sense to me for some wierd reason. All my Alfa's get synthetic and changed every 5000 miles. My pick up gets every 5000 with synthetic also.

Thank you for the lead on the oil filter at the Honda agency. Saves me a lot of trouble getting filters from dealers more than 200 miles away (Ashland/Sacramento) and paying shipping.

How did you get free oil changes under CPO? was that a dealer special. I have a CPO and get no such free oil changes.

I's not just under CPO, it's lifetime! However, the dealer is 35 miles away and in the time it takes just to get there, I can have it done in my garage. Dealer also doesn't use synthetic.

Just an observation from years ago, we had some Mitsubishi cars come into the agency with oil pressure lights on. Upon inspection we found some of the chain oil changer oil filters were breaking down and plugging up. I am sure this doesn't happen any more, but never the less, I just don't go to those places. When I change my oil and I screw up, I know the source.
Mobil 1 oil filters are pricey, but they do work. I am sure Honda gets their filters from a reputable manufacturer so they don't have nightmares.
After all, how many companies actually produce filters? Like generic brand food, it all comes down the same assembly line, we just put a different label on it and change it just a bit.
