Noisy engine valves on start-up: Anyone else?

Hi,

My '06 puts out a lot of valve tick on startup but eventually quiets down after warming up. I know that there's a maintenance note to "adjust the valves during service A, B, 1, 2 or 3 only if they are noisy" so I'm assuming this is indicative of the motor. Does anyone else have this issue?

Thanks,

cbrose

I have it too at 50,000 miles, sounds like a truck in the morning,I am going to fight with the dealer due to still having 10,000 more miles on my bumper to bumper.

Well, as far as I know valve adjustment if it's a maintenance item has always been a you-pay-for-it thing. Just another item like changing oil, or diff fluid, etc.

I used to adjust the valves in my Toyota 20R engine myself, but don't think I would do it on the RL

If your valves are out of adjustment you may want to get on it, not a great idea for them to be too far out of spec.

Louder radio fixes most mechanical problems.

If it is the valves, get them adjusted.

But often the fuel injectors make click /tick sounds that can be mistaken for a valve tick.

Hmm, it could be the fuel injectors. What I need to do is open the hood and get my ears close to the valve covers and see if I can localize the sound. I'm still under warranty so it might be a dealer-discretion item. Thanks!

Valve adjust has never been a warranty items as far as I know, my guess is $250 -$300.
Probably not the injectors.

im pretty sure its no big deal cause i felt the same when i first got my RL. To some ppl they cant hear it and to others yes but at the end i notice a lot of the acuras sound the same and which is not super quite. injectors can be heard thats for sure.I had a tsx loaner 07 last year and it sounded like it was running with 1 quart of oil. but at the end i asked the dealer is this common and they said that ticking noise is normal in the RL.

Just bought an '05 RL and noticed that sound too. Dealer said the same thing. I wouldn't have believed them except that I've known a couple of honda owners that have had the same sound. I figure it's just a honda/acura thing. Bought it anyway, let me know if adjusting the valves fixed your problem and approximately what it cost.

When the engine is cold, I get a little valve noise (I think) under moderate acceleration. I keep the RPM's fairly low when its cold, but its a little noisy at the peak of each gear, but not before it reaches the peak - say around 3k RPM for one second or so.

Similar issue or different??

I remember reading here about a startup engine noise that should last about 20 seconds after a cold startup in the morning. My 05RL is doing just that, then back to its usual self before I start driving the car every morning. I think this is normal for our cars.

We have this. Sounds 'noisy' at start up and after a short drive quiets right down.

Valve/Injector noise at start up

I was at the dealer last week and asked about the noise. I got a "they all do that" response, which in this case, I actually believe.
