Noise from Rear Differential?

Every since I basically stripped the whole interior out of my car I have been hearing two different notices I hadn't noticed before.

One of these noises happens regardless whether the car is in motion or is in park, although once I get past about 20mph the noise is a higher pitch.

I parked my car in the garage yesterday and tried to figure out where this high pitched noise I had been noticing is coming from, while the car was on.

I put my ear near every inch of the vehicle and finally found the source of the high pitched noise was coming from the rear seating area (I have the rear seat removed).

My idea is that this noise is the rear differential whirl noise that some people encounter, and that the rear seat deadens this sound at lower speeds (or lower rpm's).

This noise is consistent in pitch and I guess the most similar noise I can think of is the sound you get when you put a golf cart in reverse (not nearly as loud though).

The noise itself won't bother me because I have some MLV I am going to be putting down before I reinstall this rear seat. I just need to know whether my differential is going bad (car has 110k miles).

Also if anyone else things there differential is making noise try driving around without the bottom part of the rear seat. It takes about 5 minutes to remove it. There is just 2 clips under the seat on the driver and passanger side that are spring loaded that just need to be released. This could help you diagnoise any noise you may think you are hearing.

Fuel pump is below the rear seat. a failing fuel pump can actually make that annoying sound. more along the line of a hum or buzz sound?

have you ran the car low on gas a lot? how many miles are on the car?

That actually makes sense! I noticed that there was 2 fuel tank sensors or something on each side. I always run it to E and then go into the gas station. The car has 100k miles and that would explain why it makes the noise even when I am stopped, I definitely can't hear it once I get passed 40mph because the road noise is louder and even when the car is in the garage it is pretty faint, but it is a humming sound like you said. I think once I put the seat back over it I won't be able to hear it so I wonder if this is just the way it is suppose to be? I never notice the sound until I took the seat up. How much is a new fuel pump?

You would not be able to hear a differential when the car is still. Fuel pump, eh? Shouldn't be more than a grand or two...

Im not sure who's Chicken Little, but anyway I would just buy the Denso Fuel Pump, after taking apart my interior I've noticed half the sensors and various other things have Denso labels on it...so I would probably be buying the same thing just from Honda/Acura

Your post went through too close to mine for me to be replying to it. I was replying to the guy who can't escape the fear of his RL getting hit by a meteor and the dreadful price he would have to pay if his windshield wiper broke.

Whoa, if you do it yourself, great! But what about labor if you don't do it yourself? On most cars, replacing the fuel pump involves removing the gas tank. This is not an easy job without a shop. Last time I saw someone do this himself, he borrowed a neighbor's forklift.

I am not being alarmist in this. Call the dealer or any good shop. It will be around $1000.

I have to admit tho, I am shocked about the price of the pump itself. I expected double that.

actually the labor is only about a hour on the book.. remove backseat.. removed 4 screws on cover. then remove the 6 or 8 10mm bolts holding the fuel pump in.. swap everything over reassemble. should be done in about 30 mins honestly

Really? I am truly shocked. That they would actually consider repair procedures in the future and allow access in this manner. I have seen this job done on several cars including one of my own and they all required removal of the fuel tank. A procedure such as that would surely cost $1000 or close to it on almost any car. Great news if this is true.

Hey 007, I'll bet that wiper assembly is hella expensive!

Every honda/acura i have ever owned they made access to the fuel pump pretty easy always under the backseat with access cover. i do like that the RL has a separate sending unit its a pain trying to squeeze a sending unit and fuel pump in a tank all on one rod.
