New member intro

Hello Forum,

My name is Troy and I'm currently in the market for a 2nd gen RL; which coincidentally, is how I found ya'all. I'm very familiar with car forums, their search engines, and how to do my due diligence, so I'll be careful not to ask too many dumb questions. Currently everything I read sounds promising.

I test-drove an '05 this week and was very impressed. Although, I'm thinking an '06 may be preferable. The tech package sounds like a nice addition. Thoughts? I really like the wood wheel and shift knob. I'm guessing that's another package too.

A hobby car I currently have is this '69 MGB GT (James). It's fun to take into town or exercise all 97 hp through the hillside.

Anyways, I look forward to hearing/reading tips from any/all about this great car.

Thanks,
Troy

Welcome, my dad use to have a mgb GT (blue) along with a lot of other classic British cars. He is currently doing a full restoration on his tr6 (close to starting it up)

Nice mgb GT you have

05 RL has all the bugs, while 06 is mostly trouble free. I have a black on black 07 with tech package 40k miles and love the car. I'm not saying the 05 will give you problems, but has a higher probability of problems

People from Oregon shouldn't use the word "y'all".

The '06 has less issues than the '05, but still doesn't have all the kinks worked out of the door handles, A/C, and propeller shaft. I suggest getting an '07+. I also suggest getting a tech model. '06 only has the base and tech levels. With the tech, you get CMBS and ACC, but you also get PAX wheels and the headaches that come with them. '07+ has three trim levels. Tech I has all the electronics sans CMBS, ACC, and PAX. Tech II (CMBS) has the whole package.

Welcome. I would definitely suggest an 06+ just to avoid some of the first model year glitches reported around here. An 07-08 would be perfect though. The wood steering wheel and shift knob were dealer installed accessories. They are pretty scarce these days but can be found used.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've always been leery about the first year quirks and try my best to avoid them, so that is a great reminder.

@007 - I'd never want to steel a common phrase from your home town.

Perhaps I don't have enough posts yet, but I thought I'd be able to edit my own writings.

Thanks for the compliment. I am the guy in the Talking Heads song saying to himself - "this is not my beautiful house - this in not my beautiful wife". Somewhere, somehow, I became one fortunate sonofabitch. Thank you universe!

Spelling isn't always my forte; which is why I love the edit button.

Speaking of which, I just tried to edit another thread and wound up posting the damn thing twice.

Then I learned I lost 17 experience points today. Can someone shed some light on how one loses points? I tried searching and found nothing; probably wound up posting another turd.

You have been here 40% longer than me and only have 10% more points.

I've been here longer and have less points than either of you.

You guys have made me look at my points for the first time. I seem to be getting about a billion points per post.

Wow, I really like this point system.

Needing an AWD to get the kids up to the mountain, and not knowing enough about the RL's, I decided to pick this up before the snow melts. It's a '98 v70 AWD T5. While it's a bit "boy-racer" for me, it's got some nice updates; the best being the stereo. Plus I got it for a steal.

I'll be lurking off and on for awhile. I've enjoyed the site with all the enthusiast advice. Once I'm confident in which RL to buy, I'll be back to share.

Until then, thanks for all the input guys!

Ha! It is ridiculous. You don't want to hear my wife's comments.

The bimmers are going away pretty soon; although my love for German cars will stay. The Volvo will go to our 2nd daughter sometime next year, once she leaves for college. That's when I plan on having my replacement (planned RL).

Yes, I have a "rollover". Have you seen how these cars are appreciating?!? I bought that project from my brother, who was struggling at the time. It's a ground up restoration with many new or like new parts, including a 0 mile, 1800cc engine. I just need to find someone who can weld the ragtop frame in.

Buehler?

To answer your question, all 05's were "tech" cars they started the different packages in 06 and up where you get back up sensors and cameras... the car to have are the newer models with the USB ports IMO.

As for reliability you are rolling the dice on an 05.
I say, there are many like it, but this one is mine, and mine has been great.

You will find TONS of documentation on squeaks, noises, whines, door handle issues, and CD changers failing... but the reality is you will rarely hear a story where a well maintained RL left anyone stranded.

guilty. but, I was not stranded.

The handle thing is simple... no pressure washes and keep the FOB in the car when washing.
