Mysterious sound

Hey folks,

This might be the proverbial needle in a haystack question, however, I have an annoying sound coming from the general area of the driver's side wheel. It happens at different speeds when I go over a slight bump and sounds like someone tapping a small hammer on aluminum. It is a slight popping sound almost like the suspension has an issue.

I'm just looking for possible causes. Oh yeah, it is a 2005 RL with 88K.

Thanks!

I have the same issue. The dealership is stumped and half the time they don't understand what I'm talking about.

I'd take it to a dealer or twto have them figure it out. As long as they're not charging for diagnostics...

found this through google:
Complaint Number:10148698 Incident Date:January 1, 2006 Date Added to File:January 25, 2006
Description of the Complaint:
2005 acura rl brake assembly parts were not made to fit properly and had to be retrofitted to stop loud rattling and banging whenever the vehicle was driven over uneven or rough surfaces. While the consumer tried to use the radio a code entry message was displayed on the screen and the radio wouldn't work.

I have something like that going on... When I hit a slight uneven patch of road or hit a bump, but ONLY on the passenger side, I hear some type of rattling banging noise... Though it was the A-Spec wheels or something, but I'm confident it isn't now.

Takin it in soon to be checked out, but what's this stuff about brakes?? Sounds definite suspension related....

BTW, noise is enough that people walking down the street can hear me if I catch a pothole on the pssngr frnt side.

TSB 05-021
Rattle From Front Suspension Area or Front Brakes Squeal At Low Speed

While driving on rough roads, you may hear a rattle from the front suspension, or while braking at low speed, you may hear a squeal from the front brakes.
The vehicle may have both symptoms.

If you qualify for the TSB and haven't had it done, head over to the dealer. The qualifying VINs are:

2005: Brake squeal: From VIN JH4KB16..5C000001 through JH4KB16..5C015259
Rattle: From VIN JH4KB16..5C000001 through JH4KB16..5C020423

2006:
Brake squeal with or without rattle: From VIN JH4KB16..6C000001 through JH4KB16..6C006768

I think i have the same problem as he OP. However the noise i'm getting is more of a "ticking/clicking" type, but is still comming from the same general area. Please update us on what the problem/fix is.

I hope it isn't a major problem as i opt to take my RL in next week (no loaner at all this week) so i could take the new 09 TL on a joyride...

At Acura now and guy told me everything LOOKS fine, tech took road test didn't hear anything unusual... I now gotta try and pinpoint the sound a little better, but the more likely scenario is I will road test with tech another time down a road where it makes the noise...

But ball joints and suspension and all that is fine they said so..

Will find road to drive down with tech that makes the noise on... since the noise doesn't happen all the time.

The latest that I am being told is that it may be something to do with the frame; possibly a tack-weld that has popped loose. Unfortunately, they say that it needs to be more consistent before they can pinpoint the problem.

I have the same problem on my 2006 and my dealership wasn't able to verify the noise.

On my '99 RL I had the same noise and it was verified as "the brake shoe rattling." So they made adjustments and it was gone.

I had this problem checked out on my 2006 right before I moved islands, so now I'm stuck with taking my car to the Honda dealership. We'll see if Honda can find it when I have to take it in for another service. It's not a constant problem but irritating none-the-less.

Same problem/result too! Took my 05 RL to the dealership for a driver side clicking/ticking noise (i thought it was a the driver rear mirror), but they said it was the brake shoe rattling. So far so good, seem to an easy fix....
