My Fluid Upgrade Review
My Fluid Upgrade Review
So I have been riding the Z1 wagon for quite a while now. Just did a 3x3 flush on trans with some dw1, also did synthetic 80-90 gear lube in the transfer case, and did the Dual pump fluid in the rear diff.
I already noticed a huge improvement of shifting, manual mode i don't feel that pull forward feeling when shift it the transition is very smooth, city driving in D shifts are 100x better. I will see if there is any help with MPG's later next week when i need to fill up.
So if your still lingering about doing a full fluid swap to the new stuff i would highly recommend it

Drain 3 quarts, Fill 3 quarts
Drive through all gears
Drain 3 quarts, Fill 3 quarts
Drive through all gears
Drain 3 quarts, Fill 3 quarts
you are done.
This virtually removes all the old fluid but I might do a 4x3 just to be sure tomorrow, that would be repeating the above steps one more time.

There are 6 different chambers in the tranny of the RL that hold almost 8 qt like BDogg mentioned. When you pull the drain plug, only ~3 qt come out like Matt said. By filling it back up and driving, you mix the 3 new with the 5 old and run it through all chambers by hitting each gear and the torque converter in 5th. Drain it again, and theoretically you will drain a little over 1 quart of the new and almost 2 quarts of the old. Fill it up, and you will be left with about 5 qts new, 3 qts old. Once more and you get 6.6 qts of new fluid and just over one quart of old stuff. Obviously the more you do the more you get out, but you will never get it all out. Also, you are throwing away almost 3 qts of new stuff with a 3x3 and the portion only goes up with each step.
Correction: Like Carbon mentioned.
I did find it to be a pain in the ass to change the tranny fluid b/c of the splash shield. So instead of flushing 3 times in a day, I will change the tranny fluid with the next two oil changes as well.

it would also be nice to have a sticky with all the genuine Acura fluids (or recommended fluids) that should be used AND how many quarts of each should be purchased, this way it might prevent having so many threads on fluids. I personally would like to get all my fluids changed in June and would love to know how much of each I need to purchase in order to have a private mechanic do all the fluid changes. I've added a million threads into my favorites trying to figure out what fluid is needed and how much. If no one does it sooner, I'll try to start an excel sheet with this information in the next couple of weeks.
I just did a 3x3 with Amsoil Synthetic Transmission Fluid and their was a definite improvement over the old Honda Z1.

I was following that thread as well. One thing I'm still unsure of is how much of each fluid I need to purchase.
