Mobil 1 or Amsoil (oil & filter)
Mobil 1 or Amsoil (oil & filter)
Both Mobil 1 and Amsoil place in the top three for synthetic oils and filters. I'm leaning towards Mobil 1 because I can drive to the local Pep Boys and pick them up. However, any of you have experience with either one of these items?
Any information you provide is very helpful.
Thnx!

I use both but prefer Amsoil because I'm a dealer and access in not a problem for me.
They are coming out with new filtering media from Donaldson-"micro filtration" technology.
They already have gone to this for the Amsoil air filters.
That said I use the Mobil1 filter for my '04 TL because it is larger and is also a great filter IMHO.
I will probably go with the Amsoil filter for the TL when the new ones comes out.
You can't go wrong with either one.

IF you really insist on using a syn, Amsoil XL 5w-20 gets my vote due to excellent results I've seen with this formulation and Honda V6 engines. Stay with the service interval suggested by the MID.
However, with the cold Philly winters, I suggest doing an oil change twice a year, since the cold weather is quite hard on oil. It makes more sense (cost wise) to run a quality conventional 5w-20 such as Pennzoil or Havoline with a decent filter (Supertech, Advanced Auto Total Grip, Purolator Premium Plus, or Napa Proselect) at shorter, 3-5K drains. This works out to 4-6 months for most people, and I suggest doing an oil change once before the winter (Oct or Nov) and once in the spring (Apr or May).
Most low cost SM rated conventionals, especially Havoline and Pennzoil, can go easily go 5-7K between drains when suggested by the MID. The gap between conventionals and syns have closed significantly with the better formulations required for the SM standard. It is an incorrect assumption that syn oils automatically extend the service interval even though they have a greater amount of detergent, since dirt, solids, fuel dilution, depletion of the Anti-Wear additive, and contamination may instead be the limiting factor.
