Mice infestation in cabin air filter

Wow, I smelled something weird and I keep my 08 RL outside, and I decided to check the cabin air filter and there as mice droppings, and a huge piece of insulation pulled down from somewhere into the filter, it was a cesspool nest.

Wow....anyone see this before? Anything I can do to stop it from reocurring? I tried to get everything I could out of there and nothing in the flywheel under the cabin air filter so I wouldn't hear click click click....

It was disgusting...

Not unheard of. Just be glad it was your cabin filter and not your engine filter. Otherwise, you would be cleaning out your TB, intake manifold and cylinders.

I actually got the RL mixed up with another car on the Engine Filter, I could easily get the 4 bolts off but then couldn't move the top housing without fear of breaking something. I guess i just need to watch someone do it once before I do it. I searched for videos and found nothing. I guess I will park the car somewhere else now LOL.

You scared me with the engine filter stuff, heck I checked the engine out and can see mice droppings in it. There was a cold spell and they wanted heat I guess.

The RL is the first car I have ever had that changing the engine air filter looks to be such a PITA, now I remember, that I gave up. I took all 4 screws off, aka loosened them and couldn't get the top part to move enough to change filters and I was scared to break the plastic tube that connected to the upper/top case for the engine air filter.

I would delete the post immediately above but the time limit expired and I was unable.

My old '93 accord had a mouse get sucked clear into the engine after chewing through the engine air filter. Mechanic had it for over a week as they kept thinking they'd gotten it all out, only to get it all back together and still have issues. They had to de-rivet portions of the engine to get it all cleaned out -- thankfully he was good guy and only charged me $500 for all the trouble. Needless to say - these days I have 4-5 mouse traps baited and ready. I catch a mouse or a vole about once a month ... bastards.

That sounds like a fn nightmare. I figured once they got in once they won't leave it alone now, funny thing is I have had the car in the same place for years and they never bothered it. I am going to park it farther down the driveway and hope for the best, but I put about 12 traps in the garage to get em.

I felt ashamed that I got scared off before from changing the engine air filter....I found this video and was able to to it, no mice in there, looked like they had been in there though with some eaten acorns. This video saved me, pulling the tube off made all the difference.

When it gets cold out, mice look for warm areas and your motor/cabin to hang out after you shut off the motor is NICE!

I had them eat my windshield reservoir hoses, then later, go on to eat a wiring harness under the intake manifold. Was not cheap!

Get a cat! J.J.

We had a cold snap here a few weeks ago and when I opened that garage the next morning I found the corner garage weather strip chewed and rubber morsels inside and outside of the garage. Then I noticed paw prints in the dust all over my RL....hood, roof, windscreen, the side view mirrors and even the on the engine covers under the hood.

I put down some D-Con poison in the garage and the next day most of it was eaten. I just hope the varmint got outside seeking water before exploding. So far no sign of it inside the garage nor bad smell from the car. I looked under the hood and saw no chewing signs and so far so good.

Mice and squirrels are noted for chewing wiring insulation, weather strips, foam etc. I have witnessed squirrels go flambé chewing outdoor electric cables. And when you start having electrical issues it can be a nightmare to track it down.

In my GS I found a dead mouse in the cabin air filter after smelling a foul odor. I disinfected the filter housing and replaced the filter.
