Method to determine "technology package" on 2006?

I've honed in my search to consist of a 2006 w/ Technology Package. I know that Technology Package means different things to different years, but I want CMBS.

I'm assuming there no easy way of determining whether an 06 has technology package or not based on its VIN, etc.. ?

Out of the 20 or so I've seen for sale, only a handful list Technology Package.

Does anyone know the ratio of 06 with and without? I'm trying to understand whether you have to view the car to find out -- seems like most ads are really generic, power windows, doors, air conditioning, etc..

Thanks.

its very easy, here are the following differences:
On the left side of the guage cluster, there should be 2-3 buttons
On the Bottom Right spoke of the steeringwheel, there should be two buttons, NOT THE LEFT as those are for Nav controls.
THe Acura Emblem on the front has a plastic square on it, about 2-3 inches wide on each side.

On the left side of the dash next to the gauges, there will be a "CMBS OFF" button in addition to the VSA and AFS buttons. On the steering wheel in the lower right portion there will be a button with a picture of a car and three lines on it. This is the button to control the Active Cruise Control follow distance. The Cruise Control button on the steering wheel will say "ACC" on it instead of "CRUISE". The front grill has a tinted plexiglass like cover over the Acura emblem to shield the radar. The Acura emblem on the grill is not raised like the normal RL's. The car will have PAX tires as well. They look like normal Pilot MXM tires but are bigger and have a small raised PAX emblem on each tire.

He's looking for a way to find out if a car has the tech package from the VIN or other info found in ads without viewing the car. Clearly he knows CMBS from not when he's actually looking at the thing.

That is a tough one. I do not know how you do that.

the easiest way is to look at the front grill.
the Tech car (and any with the ACC/CMBS) will have a smooth acura badge in the center of the grill, and any car without will have a raised, textured, and open acura badge in the center of the grill

THe VIN's for the RL with and without the Tech package is the same for 05 and 06, not sure for 07 as the non-navi was added.

Correct, VIN positions 6-8 (Series or Model Code) for '05 and '06 are 165 for all vehicles. For '07 and '08 the Base Model (non-navi) has 165 in VIN positions 6-8 while Navi and CMBS/PAX vehicles have 166 as a Series. The VIN does not specifically identify the presence or absence of CMBS/PAX.

Thanks for that knowledge fkinder.

Can anyone tell by the look of this image whether this car has the Technology Package w/ CMBS/PAX?

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/img_po...9&photoIndex=8

The dealer says it does have Technology package, and correct me if I'm wrongl; but I thought that all 06 that were Technology had CMBS/PAX?

Thanks.

No - that's a "base" 06 RL. It doesn't have the 06 Tech Package, which included ACC/CMBS/PAX. There are no buttons on the lower right of the steering wheel and no radar in the front of the car. The "Tech package" confusion lies in the fact that the 05 RL, 06 RL, and 07 Tech Package RL are optioned basically the same.

Correct

2005 Base = 2006 Base = 2007/08 w/Technology Package
2006 w/Technology Package (ACC/CMBS/PAX) = 2007/08 w/ Technology Package plus CMBS and PAX

Here is a picture of a 2006 Acura RL with ACC/CMBS grill, however, all 2006-08 with ACC/CMBS have this arrangement. The plastic shield/emblem is the radar antenna. Note how the grill in your picture has a metal "A" in the circle.

Chas, thanks for the info.

Just to make sure I'm crystal clear... do _all_ 2006 Technology Package cars have the ACC/CMBS/PAX?

That's what I originally thought when doing research here, but it sounds like even the Acura dealers don't know what the Technology Package means for different years.

Example:

Continental Acura -- major Chicagoland Acura dealer is claiming a 2006 w/ Technology but based on the test drive and very obvious images -- it simply is NOT.

I agree with you. The salesman has to be quite knowledgeable, and I have found very few of those. I always seem to know more than they do.

None of the 3 RL's they have listed are CMBS. Trying to find a pic of the steering wheel is the easiest way to tell if it has the CMBS system.

The PAX tire has a different looking side wall than the standard tire. The PAX tire is at it's widest right where it contacts the rim and bows in slightly to the tread.
