The typical RL buyer is a Honda lifer, often an older person who started with an Accord in the Seventies or Eighties and often fairly successful in his career. He or she expects to keep his Honda a long time and he’s willing to spend a fair amount of money to make that happen.
What? haha, I wasnt even born until the 80's.

Stupid interwebs.

If you check his prior posts and reviews he is not an Acura fan and i would argue an Acura hater for some reason.

Interesting little blurb, but more interesting comments.

Haha, the same is true for every brand specific board/fan.

There is one glaring assumption here that I find exception to.

With that said, the second-generation RL was not trouble-free and if you take a look through the owners’ forums you can see that they occasionally have expensive issues. That’s where expectations come it. The typical RL buyer is a Honda lifer, often an older person who started with an Accord in the Seventies or Eighties and often fairly successful in his career. He or she expects to keep his Honda a long time and he’s willing to spend a fair amount of money to make that happen. This is how Mercedes-Benz gained a reputation for reliability: because the owners were affluent and the cars had a reputation for lasting forever, the kind of major repairs that would send most cars to the junkyard or the buy-here-pay-here lot were simply completed without much regard for cost and next thing you know you have a 300,000-mile grey-market 230E rolling around.

While the 2005 has a relatively high number of issues (when compared to a 2004 or 2009 RL), it has also been awarded a high reliability rating in the luxury mid-size sedan class trailing only the ES and GS (measured by warranty claims). In addition to that, Mercedes Benz was the power house of the 80's because they over engineered the shit out of everything they did. They were on a mission to build the best sedan in the world (S class) regardless of cost or need with a motto of "The best or nothing". If it could be better, it needed to be. That mentality was lost in the '90s when the Japanese started building luxury cars at low cost. To assume that one of the major reasons that either of these cars lasted as long as they did is only because the owners were affluent enough to afford costly repairs that are expected on every car is to completely insult the marvel of engineering that was downplayed in the prior reason. He is backassward on his reasoning.

yall can say what you want about the 05, but mine has only seen minor issues/glitches.
And most noteworthy, all exasperated with in the warranty and none ever left me stranded.

But I can also assure you that my car sees a superior level of preventive maintenance.

The other somewhat ridiculous statement is this one.

Well, no shit. Every machine has failures, and the internet allows the failures to be collaborated into and singular, easy to find place. That guarantees no usable conclusion on the overall reliability of the machine. I also have to wonder how much of what he said came from here.

The whole theme of the article reminds me of my search for a truck though. Using AutoTrader for a Tundra 2005+ (to match the RL): 10,748 listed, 472 over 100k, 7 over 200k, 273k highest (priced at $7k). There was one for sale with 300k+ when I was searching in March asking $5k.

I picked up mine at 138k without a second thought.

Truthaboutcars was really hung up on the Acura "beak" issue on the TL's when they came out to the point of absurdity. The ironic thing is one reason that I bought my 07 RL for it's understated style, yet it gets ripped for being "boring." I like that people don't know what it is and that there are so few of them out there.

Funny you wrote this, just yesterday while walking out of the grocery store an older fellow was walking around my 07 RL A-SPEC with a confuse look on his face. He asked me what kind of car I had and when it came out. I was like an RL and it came out in 04 for the MY05..lol. He said he never seen it around.

I personally think the car ages pretty well and is going to continue to do so for a while.

Totally agree, not many people out there that appreciate the subtle look of the RL. I've always liked them since they 2nd gen first came out, I wanted one then and luckily I managed to pick one up in June with 85K.

I will say that whenever i get an RL in the shop that has a line that says "Customer states..."
i get a little nervous and wonder what can of worms i might be opening.

That was what sold me on the car. I wanted a slightly sporty, lux car with awd that will drive forever. Nothing to be ashamed of, I didn't need the car to stand out. Though I would have appreciated if it stood out more from accords. It doesn't do it justice.

I agree. I just got my 06 RL in September, and a lot of my co-workers and friends were not very familiar with the car. A lot were very surprised when I told them it was an 06. Many thought I had bought it new, as it is in excellent condition. I told them, nope its 7 years old. Heck one of my co-workers was in the market for a car and is now very interested in getting one after I mentioned the price I got it for. While not flashy at all the 2nd gen RL's styling holds up pretty damn well.

I had the same problem with my 1G, no one knows what these cars are Not that it's a problem, it makes for great depreciation as a second owner I've even had a TL owner tell me that he "...thought the TL was Acura's top car."

One of the things that swayed me into a 2G, aside from the driving experience, was the anonymity that comes with it. If no one knows what the hell it is, no one thinks you're rich

I purchased my 07 RL with 240,000km without hesitation. My Last dozen or so vehicles have been Hondas and Acuras from Civics to CRXs, to Integras and RSXes. All have lasted well into 200, 300 and (the RSX-S) 400,000 km. I decided to (liquidate the collection and) treat myself to some luxury that I am sure the honda execs (use to) roll around in.

That's because "TL" stands for Top of the Line.
