It underdrives the equipment controlled by the belt associated with it, mostly the AC. This theoretically allows less engine power to be diverted to secondary devices, meaning the engine devotes more power to moving the car.
It theoretically adds a few hp. No one has done before and after dynos on the RL with this mod, so we don't know precisely how much power this adds. However, most people with the mod indicate that the engine revs more easily with this mod, so it at least feels more powerful subjectively.

1. It is an underdrive pulley which underdrives the accessories by about 15-20%. The result is less parasitic drag on the system which can help improve hp.
2. The pulley is lightweight. Most of the gains are in the lighter weight, not the underdrive. The underdriving portion maybe adds 1-2 HP. The pulley weighs less than one pound. I think I weighed it at 14 ounces. This is why it gains power.
You will want to get the stock size pulley if you have a large stereo system (over 600 watts RMS).

That would seem to be nothing if the original pulley was like 9 lbs. It would seem like the safest bet would be to stick with the stock size, stock belts, etc., then it would be a lot more difficult for Acura to try to screw with you on the warranty should something happen.

Theoretically, the crank pulley weighs about 1 lb. The stock size should weigh slightly more than the underdrive size, so a few ounces makes sense. UR says the stock pulley weighs 7.65 lbs, so the UR is really about 6 pounds lighter.

Huh? It's either 2-4 ounces (ie 1/8 to 1/4 lb.) or several pounds lighter. The two options are vastly different and not interchangeable.
What does the pulley we remove weigh? Does anyone know?
What does the replacement pulley weigh? Does anyone know?
Post the weights and we can all do the math in SAE or Metric

Here is the link to the mfg for the stock sized aircraft aluminum crank pulley

Acura OEM crank pulley weighs 7.85 lbs
UR stock diameter crank pulley weighs 1.00 lbs
This means the UR stock diameter crank pulley is 6.85 lbs lighter than the OEM steel pulley.
The UR underdrive diameter crank pulley, according to Excelerate, is 2-4 ounces lighter than the UR stock diameter crank pulley, so that 20% our so underdrive does not buy you that much in weight.
I do not know what real effect the underdrive has vs weight reduction. I guess you would have to see dyno testing to understand that.

Chas, you nailed the details this time, and I think that wil be useful for many.
I see now that the aluminum pulley is 6.85 lb lighter than oem, and that roughs the aluminum underdrive pulley at about 7 lbs lighter than oem.

Thanks, Chas, you nailed it.
If I were going to do a pulley, I'd do a stock size one to avoid warranty troubles. I'll think about it when my car has a few more miles (like above 50k--e.g. in another year).

The UR underdrive pulley is about 14 oz.
The UR stock size pulley is about 16 oz or 1 lb
I don't see how 2-4 ounces is that off. The UR pullleys are about 6.5 lbs lighter than the stock OE pulley. I was merely explaining the weight difference between the UR underdrive pulley and the UR stock size pulley.

Thanks for the clarification.

What is now clear, as you can see above, is that:
OEM Pulley: 7.85lb
Aluminum Stock Diameter Pulley: 1.0lb
Aluminum Underdrive Pulley: 0.875lb
In terms of weight savings, were one to ask,
If the weight of the pulley is very significant to the performance enhancement (some claim it is, some claim it's not), then a seven pound difference is big news! In fact, if one were to believe the weight issue might have more "effect" than the underdriving (as some also claim/opine), then the "nearly seven pound" savings by going to an aluminum, OEM sized pulley might just turn out to be the magic bullet.
This thread, with line-item weight information in it, should be useful to many reading the site with exactly these questions in mind.

I've read similar statements on some review sites, and your comment seals the deal for me on the issue. I'd like to know how much the OEM-sized uber-pulleys cost, and whether they come in tasteful, fall colors.

Hey guys I thought it would be handy to have one thread that showcases the available upgrades for the 2nd gen RL. This way you can truly see the potential of our cars. Where possible I have shown the actual part installed on a RL for your convenience.
Let me know if you guys have any questions.

Hey Touge, Any chance you or anyone else on the board can share the sites where we can purchase these parts? Or even a number and contact to reach a retail store would be fine also. thankyou.

Touge is no longer with the RL. Also your name makes me think your RL is supercharged. If so, how?

Has anyone intalled the UR Underdrive pulley? Belt Part number? Any negative effects after install? Noticable positive attributes after install? Please let me know. I cant wait to be able to post sim pics of my RL.

Well, IMHO the RL shouldn't be modded all that much.. I personally think it's stunning as is and with a few small mods, makes it really stand out from the crowd.
So first, how can I get a cold air intake fit for my RL?
Second, what is stainless steel brakelines gonna do for me? I think the braking is just fine.

Do a search in this forum for AEM CAI or AEM Cold Air, and you'll find a lot of information, including that ther AEM kit that fits your car is the one they list for the TL with the same 3.5 liter motor as in ours.
Stainless steel brake lines make the brakes firmer and women drip off the car like honey. It's the braid.

$1200-$1500 assuming you're talking about the underbody kit.

Yeah, thanks! That's actually not too much more than what I paid for the HFP kit for the Accord which was $800. That was with a company discount though... Luckily the GF's cousin has worked for Acura for like 15 years so he made be able to trim that down a lil for me. I'm make all these plans for a car that I probably wont be getting for another 6 months and it wont even be mine! LOL!
