License Plate lights

Following the wife home last night and noticed the license lamps are out. I haven't a clue how to get the units open to check the bulbs or voltage. Do I pop off the covers with a small screw driver or do I have to remove the inside trunk cover to drop the unit out? I thought I would ask before tearing somethng up. If the cover has to come off, how is that done? I don't notice any screws.

You'd have to remove the liner on the trunk door to access the bulbs. I usually just remove the liner around the license plate area, it's all clips. The only thing that isn't a clip is the little rubber strips at the bottom of the trunk that slide towards the inside of the car to be removed. This thread should provide you with some help:
