Engine Problems Force Honda Recall

By Associated Press
Published March 19, 2007, 10:22 AM CDT

WASHINGTON -- Honda Motor Corp. said Monday that it was recalling about 165,000 vehicles from the 2005-06 model years in the United States to deal with potential engine problems.

Honda said the recall affected 2005 models of the Acura RL, TL and TSX sedans, 2005 Honda Accord coupes, sedans and hybrids, 2005 Odyssey minivans and 2006 Ridgeline trucks.

The move is part of a global recall because of similar problems, said Honda spokesman Chris Martin. Details on the total number of vehicles and the number of countries where the vehicles were sold were not immediately available, he said.

Martin said the automaker discovered that sealer material leaked onto a coil wire inside the fuel pump relay on some of the vehicles. The wire can become brittle and snap, causing the engine to stall or fail to start.

Honda has received "multiple complaints" of vehicles stalling or failing to start, Martin said. There have been no injuries or crashes linked to the defect.

Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pump relay free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in early April.

Owners can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009.

They were using 2 types of relays. If you have the Denso relay, you're fine. If you have the Mitsuba relay, you get a new one.

If you don't mind, I'm going to rename the thread so it is more helpful to readers. This is an important issue for 2005 RL owners to know about.

What's weird is that my wife's 2004 TL has a very hard time starting the engine. The starter works like a charm. I also just got a new battery. I have to pump the gas and the engine finally catches.

Taking it to the dealer this week. Its a 2004 but I might have got the first defective pump

My 2005 RL has cut out a few times at 65-70 miles an hour. This is extremely scary. I'm really annoyed that Acura did not contact me. I will be calling them this morning to get this repaired. I checked and I am in the VIN range. I called Acura and they told me that the repair was done in 2007 before I owned the car. I checked the relay and it is the defective Mitsuba relay. Las Vegas Acura wants to diagnose the problem and charge me for the diagnosis. Does anybody know that if they did the recall would they be replacing the Mitsuba relay with another Mitsuba relay or did the dealer a few years ago just take Acura for a ride and say that they did the work when they really didn't?

Good question. I'm not sure if they replaced the Mitsuba with a Denso or another Mitsuba. I'm sure this is covered in the TSB thread somewhere, will look.

Folks, its a recall, write down your VIN and call your Acura dealer, they will check and see if your car has any outstanding recalls...no need to go hunting around for relays.

Better yet, the Acura Owner Link, now My Acura, should "tell" you whether your car is subject to a recall in the Service and Maintenance link.

I would think that the dealer would see if this is the affected relay even if it has been replaced once. The would just call the area service adviser and ask to replace it again under the same recall. Then note it in the service records.

yea so the relay is in the drivers side kick panel just above the fuses. If you pull the door seal off a bit around it and then you can just pop it off and check the fuse your self they are all labeled on the plastic housing.

Now my Emissions light came on... :(

My emissions light came on a few days ago. Can this be related or another issue? The code is P0420. My big concern now is that I have to get my car smogged in a few days. Any suggestions?

That code is for Catalyst converter's low efficiency, means cat is not reducing emissions and it needs to be replaced. How many miles are on the car?
