heat gremlins

the heat gremlins are back again
Previously, I had a problem with the outside mirror not returning to up position after backing up when the car was hot in the sun. Now, its my steering wheel not telescoping again. I know this is a potential battery problem, but I believe it is heat issue as I tried getting the wheel to fully extend by pushing D1 button on the door after car was started. Thus, battery out of the equation at that point. Sequence of events:
Unlock car and start (Welcome D1 displays, so not a FOB problem)
Steering wheel does not fully extend
Push D1 button, wheel extends some, but not all the way
Push again, extends a bit more
Finally just use switch on the steering mount to fully extend.
Light for D1 on door does not illuminate.

Later at night when car is cooled down - everything back to normal.

I had similar problems and after they changed the battery, I have had zero problems, just like new. I do not know why, but once the car is started, it seems to have no effect on the D1 buttons. Once the new battery was put in by the dealer (no charge) it was an amazing transformation. 100+ degree days have not caused any issues.

Might be battery, but not willing to accept that yet. I replaced 2 yrs ago, but seems that the heat problem has always been there.
Are you saying that before you replaced battery, D1/2 buttons did not work properly, but after they did?
My D1/2 buttons always work (before or after engine started) except on the hot days.

You may have something else going on,

but I am saying that D1/2 buttons started working poorly after three years, intermittently, then not at all. I could only get the green light to come on after I set seat and steering wheel to my liking and pressing the memory button. Then shut the car off and start again, and it was as if I had never set the memory. Wheel would not come out to extended position. After they replaced the battery, no issues, car works just like new.

understood - I had similar symptoms before I replaced my battery and would occur cold mornings or hot afternoons. My current symptoms are totally heat related.

I had a similar problem with the mirror not returning to the home position. It was not heat related or battery related. The dealer just replaced the entire mirror assembly and I haven't had a problem since.

If it is the mirror not returning, then check out the TSB for that....B07-001, applies to all 2005 RLs. It may help, or not....

I thought you were having steering wheel and seat problems also associated with D1/2 losing its memory also.

Here is an excerpt

Door Mirrors Stay Tilted Down After Shifting Out of Reverse

SYMPTOM
The door mirrors intermittently stay in the tilted-down
position after you shift out of reverse.

PROBABLE CAUSE
There is a software error in the MPCS (multiplex
control system).

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the driver’s door MPCS unit and passenger’s
door MPCS unit.

PARTS INFORMATION
Driver’s Door MPCS unit: P/N 38860-SJA-A03
Passenger’s Door MPCS unit: P/N 38860-SJA-A13

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
In warranty: The normal warranty applies.

I had the mirror fix applied when the TSB first came out in 2005.

I had written on another thread last year about a heat related mirror issue. Note that it was more than mirror not returning to home position. When car was hot, the morror adjust switch would not work - sometimes just one side, sometimes both. After car cooled down, all was well.
