Headlight unit totaled

Last night on the return home from work, a truck coming from the opposite direction had a piece of ice fly off the roof and it found it's way smack into my headlight on the driver's side (I'm lucky it didn't hit the windshield). The HID lamp seems to be unscathed, but the high beam and surrounding plastic housing is all in bits and pieces.

I have an appointment on Monday to have it serviced, just curious what to expect for $$$.

New housing is around 1K. Hit a deer recently and that's how I know.

You can get it here for ~$800.00.

If you are handy, you would be much better off replacing the headlamp yourself. You would be able to get the part at a discount and also save on the labor. Otherwise, you are probably looking at about $1200.

Good luck...

I knew it was going to be expensive, just didn't think it would cost over a grand . Anyway, thanks for the info.

I also found out after the fact that there is a $500 fine (NH) for not cleaning snow/ice off the roof of your car. If that ever happens again, the other driver's insurance company should pick up the bill. Having said that, I am also guilty of not doing a good job cleaning off the snow of my car. After this incident, and learning about the possible fine, I will clean off my car in the future.

I think you have two excellent options:

1. Buy a headlight on ebay for ~$200 and install it yourself

- or -

2. Since you're looking at ~$1k from the dealer get yourself some snazzy JDM headlights!

Good advice, I would also recommend ensuring that the Ebay unit has all tabs in place as I have found that often one or more tabs are broken. Ask for pictures.

That is one expensive headlight unit. It came to $1,170. The new beam looks good so I thought I was all set. Heading to work this morning there was a message icon on the Nav screen. It said my active lighting may not be working and to have it checked out. Dropping the car off again next week to have that checked out. This time it will be on their dime, not mine.

Someone backed up into mine on 12/28, and only the insides broke while the outside was unscratched. 1 headlight goes for $1,100 new.

The JDM light assembly has a white bulb turn signal. You may think that it looks better but to the driver looking at your car, he will see the amber turn signal way more often than the white turn signal, particularly as the bulbs are adjacent. You may not care or you may not even use your turn signals but the first accident attributed to turn signal recognition ambiguity will convince you so I vote for solution #1.

There are light bulbs available that are silver in color but do in fact produce a clear, bright, amber light. Those are the ones you would use in the JDM assembly.
