Gutted oem air box

Hey guys coming from an s2000 and doing this mod to the S, I decided to change my air filter and low and behold I see restriction and some gauze type material in the oem box of the RL. So what the heck, it supposedly freed up air flow on the s2000 box so what could I hurt to try. So I pulled out the box took dykes to cut all the plastic riffles in there and removed the gauze type thing which I am thinking was to cut down on noise, sanded it nice and smooth. Then I used soap and water to clean the inside and outside of the box let air dry! voilá you now have yourself a freer flowing oem box that took all of 15 min! Wether or not we added anything is of course subject to debate! Couple this mod with a brand new oem filter and yes I did notice and increase in throttle response and gas mileage! Shame on me for no pics but this is simple and straight forward! Please do at your own risk! I did take this a step further and insulated the interior of the box with duct tape to ensure a smoother surface as I also did with my s2000!

Just curious, how are you measuring your increased gas mileage claim?

Yes, I'm sure all that stuff is for noise cancellation and to keep large particles out.

All what stuff? I never saw anything other than my K&N and the black plastic. Maybe the previous owner removed my extra "filtering".

I'm curious of this ^ too. I looked down my intake tube and didn't see a thing before the curve at the bottom.

Well prior to doing this I averaged 17 city highway, I filled up the same day I bought the filter from honda and did this mod. I am now at 20.2 mpg and drive the same way and same distance everyday, so I'm not sure but I'd jump out and say its the filter as my my throttle response is improved! I will pull my air box lid off when it's not raining here and show you guys, it under the filter inside the box you will see plastic riffles and and some gauze type material I removed all that so that the bottom of the box is
Completely smooth

does it sound any different???

i have the RL and an MDX.. similar motors but for the MDX being a 3.7L... under WOT the MDX is way louder.. you get much more intake sounds, whereas the RL is a lot quieter.

i woudln't mind a bit mor eintake growl in my car... i could do a custom intake... but wondered if your mod of removing these items made it more throaty when you hit the gas?

Remove your resonator problem solved.

I didnt have any gauze in my intake box, only the plastic rivets and a filter. Now its 3" CAI intake pipe with a massive K&N filter

I had done something similar on my 03 TL-S by removing the intake resonator. Basically the bottom half of the air filter box was gone. The intake was breathing freely, there was nothing, no restricting box after the air filter. The intake grawl was very noticeable under heavy acceleration.
