Goodbye 2005 RL...

Hello 2006 RL! I decided to trade in my 2005 OBP RL for a 2006 NBP RL with Tech Package (ACC/CMBS/PAX). I loved the handling of the 05 with the A-Spec rims, Pirelli PZero Nero M+S, and A-Spec suspension, but got annoyed with the creaks, rattles, wind rustling noise, and other issues with the 05. I always had some small regrets at buying the 05 since the good deals on the 06 model started right after that. This 06 is basically new - it only has 2,800 miles on it (it was a Honda corporate fleet car). I looked into keeping my A-Spec wheels but in the end decided I could live with the handling and looks of the PAX wheels and tires. Truth be told, with the rough roads around here (Boston area) the stiff suspension and 18" wheels were starting to take a toll on my back. The ACC on the new car is awesome and black on black is just a great look for the RL with the chrome exhaust tips. I may add the wood wheel and shift knob later on but I'm pretty happy with the car for now. Here are a few photos:

Now if someone could just tell me how to get the Nav to default to "Heading Up" instead of "North Up" I'd be thrilled. And yes the fob is linked and the map is zoomed to the correct scale!

Congrats on the new RL!

To change the NAVI North Up / Heading direction, just press the Interface Dial when viewing the map. The pop up menu will allow you select.

I just finished washing & waxing my OBP RL and now I need to 'dust' it! Good luck with NBP!!!

NBP looks awesome when it's clean. I guess I'll just have to wash it more often.

I know how to change the North Up/Heading Up setting but shouldn't it be saved so I don't have to do it each time? I don't remember having to do it each time in the 05. Not a huge deal but it would be nice if the setting were saved.

If you zoom out too much, the heading direction will automatically change to north up. Sometimes when I tried to clean the nav screen, I accidentally brush against the selection icon and inadvertently changed heading to north up.

Not sure what your 05 RL color was but with the Nighthawk Black Pearl....get ready to do a lot of car washes and using the California duster to keep this car clean. I have first hand on this...b/c I got the same year and color. Don't get me wrong...I love the color, but it's a like a hight maintanence girlfriend! It's a lot of work!!!!

Enjoy the new ride! Btw, did you take your 18" Aspec wheels with you before your got rid of your 05?

As I said in the first post, the screen is zoomed in appropriately (to the 1/2 mile point). I have to change it to "Heading Up" each time I start the car. The fob is linked correctly as well - the setting just won't save. All other settings are retained correctly when the car is started.

The 05 was Opulent Blue Pearl - almost as much of a pain to keep clean. Besides, I live in the Northeast - there's only so much you can do to keep a black car clean up here between the pollen and road salt. My wife has has a black MDX - it looks great for a day after you wash it then is dirty again.

I didn't keep the A-Spec wheels. They were on the 05 when I bought it so I didn't have another set of wheels. It was too much of a hassle (would have needed to buy the insert and the spare tire) and the handling with the PAX wheels/tires is fine.

dw, that's a great-looking car, and getting another RL was a good choice. Congratulations.

Offhand, I don't know why your nav won't stay at heading up. Mine always has. I ran through all the Setup, Info and Menu options and don't find anything that "sets" that.

Here's a possible explanation; when you zoom out beyond a certain point (maybe 1 mile) it will always default to north up. You can only use the "heading up" orientation when you are zoomed in on the last few settings.

Not to sound like a jerk but I've answered this a few times now. I understand about the zoom. I have it zoomed in correctly to the 1/2 mile scale - I have to change it manually to "Heading Up" each time I start the car. The 1/2 mile scale setting is retained but it defaults to "North Up" each time. And the fob is linked correctly.

LOL, your right. I guess I should have read the whole thread first. Let's see how many others make the same obvious suggestion

Seriously though, now giving it more then 30 seconds of consideration, here's my thoughts;

At this point we've not narrowed anything down. It still can be a hardware or software issue.

If it were a hardware issue then it would probably be an issue with the NVRAM chips that store setting after power down. But, if that were the case, why wouldn't all the setting be lost? That's hard to explain. Although still a possibility, that fact makes me want to lean towards a software problem.

If it were a software problem then you would expect others would report it also UNLESS you have some flawed version of the software that slipped out into production for a short period of time. I guess that's a possibility.

Suggestion; Why don't you go ahead and upgrade the software to 4.62. It's the 2008 version that just came out. You'll get new features from the version you currently have AND it will help narrow down the source of the problem. If it continues to happen after the upgrade then you have a hardware issue.

My money is on software and the upgrade fixing the issue.

by the way, 4.62 will also fix the daylight savings time problem. You'll probably want it anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions. I agree it's likely a software issue. I'll look into the 4.62 update.

That's a GREAT looking car DW!

I just bought an '05 about a month ago...actually an '05 RL and an '07 TL, both white. I would have jumped on black in a heartbeat, but couldn't both in black while I had the itch.

To be perfectly honest, I'm loving the RL so much...but missing some of the toys on the '06+, that I will be trading up sooner than I had thought. My first impression was that I was going to keep this untill the wheels fall off and thus started down my upgrade path. I'm having second thoughts on that plan everyday. Of course there is no driving NEED...just WANT's.

Again, great looking car.

Is this a no-cost upgrade?

Software upgrades are not free unless the dealer promised you one. Example: you just bought a new 08 RL that still had the 07 disk in it.

Be thankful they even offer upgrades. My other car has a nav system in it and the manufacturer stopped providing map updates for it already. It's only 3 years old!

Toyota. But I can't blame them too 100%. They didn't have any Toyota Sienna's available with Nav at the time (this was 2004). So, they said they'd install it with the system at the dealer. They did install the same unit that came from Toyota, but, it wasn't the OEM version. it was the retail version. Eclipse stopped making it and didn't offer cd upgrades anymore.

Good system but bad aftermarket support. Toyota is 50% responsible for choosing that company to provide them with their systems. Not sure if they still use them.

I saw that RL up at Honda North in Danvers!! BEAUTIFUL! I was looking in the windows of it the other day when I drove my sister up to have her Accord serviced.

BTW, I'm in Lynnfield. Where are you located? Congrats on the new purchase and keep your eyes out for a silver TSX with an Acurazine.com sticker on the back right window, it's me.

Yup - that's the car. I actually went up there to look at the blue one that they had but it was sold already. I decided I could live with NBP.

I live in North Grafton (right near the Pike and I-495).

Actually with PAX, you still have 18" wheels...18.1" actually. I agree, they do ride very nicely, much better than the 17" package!

It is a great looking car, though I am biased!
