Gas Mileage and Range - What are you Getting?

A thread was started last year with the last reply in November or so, so I thought I would see what everyone is getting now. My range, per the MID, with a full tank of gas is about 300 miles and my average mileage per tank is about 14 mpg. I have about 5000 miles on my RL.

I just drove a loaner while my RL was getting serviced and I thought the range on that car was around 400 miles on a full tank.

I would appreciate anyone's reply. Thanks.

My wife is the primary driver of the RL and she's pretty tame on the throttle. She averages around 20 in the city and 24~25 on the highway.

I have @ 3000 miles on my RL. I am averaging 20-21 mpg with mixed driving. On a 2 hour each way business trip I took last month I averaged 26.7 mpg on the highway. This month I took the same trip, but the temp is up 20 degrees from last month and I ran the air.......averaged 24 mpg. I am pleased with my mileage so far. The first 1000 miles I was getting discouraged with the numbers, but as the car breaks in, the mileage is increasing and I am satisfied.

Beats the heck out of my prior SUV...11 to 14 mpg.

kph3 and DCD, thanks for the responses. What does the MID say your range is on a full tank of gas? Thanks again.

Gator...it depends. Right after I fill up, I reset the av. mpg. It will be anywhere from 350-400 and if I do a bit of highway driving after the reset, it's always more toward 400.
Yesterday, I drove 100+ miles on the highway at about 75mph average....the display was showing 27.8mpg for the trip. The best I've seen since ownership. The car has 5,500 miles.

I'm averaging just over 20 mpg (U.S.) for city only driving. I've only got 1800 miles on my RL, so I'm expecting the mileage to improve slightly as it gets broken in. I've got a road trip to the mountains in a couple of weeks, so I'll report back on the highway mileage then.

Wow, some of you guys are getting good city numbers and I have no idea how...maybe good lights in your city?

I dont drive hard but I get around 14-14.5 litres/100km in city driving. If I can go without having to do many stops at lights/signs I can coast at like 12 L/100 but the stops/starts hurt that.

Acura lists the city estimate as 13.1 L/100km for city on their website so if I can hit that on a tank I'd be happy. Hell, 13.5 would be ncie ot hit.

On the highway I get good mileage. On the current tank the first trip was highway and I was around 10L/100Km or a bit under 10L.

I think I have 2800 or so km on the car.

Quick calculation from litres/100km to U.S. mpg is: 235.25 divided by the mileage in l/100k. For example, 10 l/100km translates to 235.25 divided by 10 = 23.525 mpg. To calculate l/100km into Canadian mpg: 282.16 divided by the l/100km number.

I'm getting 11.7 l/100km which is 20.1mpg U.S. in city only drivng. RobL must be a more aggressive driver than I am. I've actually gotten much better mileage in the city but a few trips of "spirited" driving showing off the RL's handling to friends always seems to bring me back up to the 11.7 l/100km. My driving style is definitely conservative - I'm never in a hurry to go anywhere other than the occasional bout of spirited driving with the paddle shifters.

I think my mileage isn't all that great. I'll be taking a long trip next week (Chicago-Florida and back) and will have a chance to see extended highway mileage for the first time; I'll report back here once I have numbers. So far my sense is I won't get as good a MPG number as my 'vette (31 mpg on highway, ironic ain't it?) or as good a range as the Volvo X-country I traded in (downtown Chicago to SW Atlanta 'burbs with only one stop for gas). I really care more about the range than I do the mileage - I hate having to stop when I'm on the road, just wastes time.

In answer to the question about what the MID reads for range after a fillup it's usually in the low 300-something for a little bit after I leave the gas station (320 to 330-ish) then drops into the high 200's kinda quick. I still only have about 3K miles on it so I figure there's still some breaking in to go.

Gator5000e, the range displayed in the MID is a function of the current fuel consumption rate and the past driving history. The reason that the loaner you had displayed a much greater range is that the drivers prior to you had a more conservative driving style or spent more time on the highway and the car expects the same when calculating the range. Had you driven the loaner for an extended period of time in city only driving, the full tank range would have read 300 miles. The difference in full tank range that you noticed is not a variation in mileage from car to car but rather from driver to driver or variation in driving situations (city vs highway) . The variety of mileages reported in this thread is testimony to this fact.

Mileage

I have about 10k on my RL and and consistently get 27 - 31 when I drive. I fill the tank to the brim when I start and when I finish. Montana does not have much stop and go traffic so I guess the 220 miles I drive is pretty much straight shot. The warmer the weather the better for me. When it gets to -20 and -30 below I always burn more fuel.

Today, I passed 3,000 miles on my 2005 RL. Stop and go city driving average is 19.5mpg.

For the thirty-six uninterrupted desert miles from my home to shooting club and back, I get 25mpg.

I do not jack-rabbit but do put the foot to the pedal when the opportunity presents itself.

When I am able to drive twenty or so highway miles at 75mph, the milage increases to the 30mpg range.

The car is an awesome performer.

Regards to all

22000 miles on the clock, i drive about 200 miles per day commute + other driving.. i get about 20 to 33 miles per gallon (prolly due to freeway driving), don't use it all that much in the city, currently driving my S2000 in the city mostly (more fun).

First tank of gas 12mpg (perhaps because the car was sitting on for so long while I played with the toys??) 2nd tank (current tank) 18mpg. I remember reading that the MPG goes up after the breakin period...?

10,100 on the odometer. After filling up my range reads 400 miles. It usually ends up being 360-370 miles when the low fuel light comes on. Average MPG is 20-21 when I'm at the end of a tank. Like others, it was not this good when I first got the car. After the 6,000 mile mark it kept getting a little better after each tank of gas. I drive about 80 miles round trip each day during the week, mostly highway. Little if any on the weekends if I can help it. You could say I'm a spirited driver but I set the cruise on 80 when I hit the highway.

I may be but overall I think I drive like a baby in the city. I think it is just all the stop signs and the crappy traffic lights here and I guess maybe I rev it up a bit more leaving the stop signs. hehe

Some trips to/from work I can get pretty good (say 12l/100km) but then after more city driving it goes up to 14.

On my last tank I got 20mpg average before I filled it up with 1/4 fuel left...I was somewhat happy with that all things considered especially since there were a few times on the highway where I floored it out of frustration.

My mileage has been getting better though so that is a good sign...guess the engine is still breaking in.

Whats a good rpm figure to have the car shift at when startimg from a stop?

You're absolutely right RobL, traffic has as much, if not more, to do with your mileage than how agressively you drive. Edmonton, just doesn't have to traffic that southern Ontario does and I'm lucky that I never have to drive in rush hour.

Just got back from my Chicago-Florida-Atlanta-Chicago trip and my highway mileage was a hair under 28 mpg with an average speed of just under 75 mph (why do people just sit in the left lane and not move over?!?!?!?). Obviously there were lots of times where I was going a lot faster than that, so I'm pleasantly surprised at the RL's highway mileage. Still not as good as my 'vette's, but then I couldn't have listened to the awesome XM Live8 coverage in the 'vette (XM didn't become factory option until the C6).

I'm guessing that your RL weighs 700-800 pounds more than your Corvette which would explain the mileage difference. The other difference with the Vette is all that low end torque allows them to use an extremely tall overdrive gear for highway driving (the vette can cruise at 1800 rpm on the highway and still have the ooomph to accelerate a bit without downshifting)

Correct - 6th gear on a C5 is a 2:1 OD, so the motor is just loafing at 75 mph (I think maybe 1500 rpm, been a while so I could be off a bit). Also the 'vette has a much better Coefficient of Drag. My intent wasn't really the direct comparison of the 2 as much as I just get a kick out of the fact that my modded 'vette makes over 100 HP more than the RL yet is the best mileage vehicle I've driven on the highway since my '82 Rabbit Diesel 5-spd (which somebody stole, who the hell steals stick-shift Rabbit diesels?).

Time for my first oil change on the RL, I'm hoping that I'm on the way to a good break-in and that my city mileage might improve a bit over time.

Updated MPGs?

Can we get some updated MPGs?

I have had my RL for five months and have 6,100 miles on it. 90% is highway driving and I normally drive 20 miles in each direction each day.

I've been keeping track of the gas consumption from the first day and I have averaged 18.4 MPG over the entire period.

My best tank of gas was 20.9 MPG. I have only received over 20 MPG in three fill ups the entire time. My worst mileage was 17.2.

I'm taking my RL for its first service next week, so we'll see if anything is out of adjustment.

I would have expected that the gas mileage would be increasing by now.

What's your experience?

Dave

More recently I have been driving 50 city and 50 highway with about 35% of the city driving at a constant 45mph (no stopping and going, so very similar to a highway). The speed limit on the hwy is 70 - of which I am between 70 and 80 usually. I usually average around 23mpg.

When I drove 100% hwy from Detroit to Chicago I had 28MPG

I have 2900 miles on the car.

I have been getting outstanding mileage when I drive up to Kalispell, mt. I have been filling the tank up to the brim before and after and I get 33.2 . Specifics....
16,000 miles on car, air temp 71, speed avg 67, A/C off moon roof open, no head or tail wind, one person in car one over night bag, tire pressure 34 front and 32 rear after 20 minutes of driving (cold temp 32 F 30R), Oil Honda 5W 20W, light traffic (Labor day weekend). I still had a range of about 378 miles after my 230 mile drive.

The mileage a particular driver will attain with the RL or any other vehicle is largely a function of his/her driving style. I'm a relatively conservative driver and I get 20.6 mpg in the city and 26.1 mpg on the highway.

Wow thats great mileage Hondamore. I drive pretty conserative most of the time. I use shell v-power gas witch I am told is a high quality gas. I wonder if it is something with the shifting and software update? Reason I ask is it seems when I pull out in traffic or go above say 3500 rpm my tack seems to stay there for 5 seconds or so before it shifts back to 4th or 5th. Could there be a problem or is it the computer waiting to see if I get back on the gas peddle to reduce gear hunting?

I've got 5,516 miles on my RL and have averaged 19.98 miles per gallon since it was new. I'm getting about 17 - 18 mpg around town and 21-22 on the highway.

Wow, really impressed with some of the numbers up there. Saw some in the upper 20's...I wonder why such a disparity? I've put nothing but the good stuff in and always get gas at a reputable location and a good brand (Exxon, Chevron, ...).Those of you getting the higher mpgs, do you always get fuel at the same branded station? Share some details. I would love to achieve 28-30 mpg...

Constant speeds will get you 27-28mpg on the hwy. Between here (detroit) and chicago I go about 75mph constantly without huge slowdowns or increases in speed and I get roughly 27mpg.

That's what I got on a recent trip, 27 mpg. The city mileage varies greatly, depending a lot on the driver. Also, people who live in the big cities need to remember that when you're stopped in a traffic jam you're getting 0 mpg. I'm glad I don't live in a big city and have to fight traffic to and from work each day.
