Forbes: Acura RL vs. Lexus LS

Of course, I don't think this is a fair fight, but Forbes has a poll where we can vote on which we think is the better car:

http://www.forbes.com/2006/07/26/acu...partner=alerts

Let's show some support for our beloved RL!

The fact that the RL is constantly compared with cars in a class ABOVE it says a lot about it. The RL is meant to compete with the 5/E/M/GS.

The RL is the better overall car but the LS is the better luxury car.

Which is why I find it annoying that the regular (aka non-car media) "journalists" can't seem to recognize that fact.

hehe yeah, a forum based on a car brand owns a whole car line that makes more money in a month than everyone here combined makes in a year. Gotcha

I do wish I owned Lexus...would be some nice income there.

I find it funny people are just blindly voting for something simply because it is an Acura when they prolly haven't even driven both...but hey, it is just some silly internet poll that means nothing so big deal.

Interesting that this poll comes out when the 3G LS is pretty much on the way out, with a MUCH better 4G model scheduled to appear shortly.

I have driven both, and the rl and top line lexus are different animals. I personally like the RL better, but then I don't like a float like a butterfuly type ride. The RL gives you both sport AND comfort. I have driven every single Car in the RL class and so far I cannot find a Better OVERALL car. ESpecially at low 42 price. The car is simply oustanding IMO.

Hey there bucko, i spent my parents college visits riding around in an LS, and my dad drives an RL which i beat mercillessly when i'm home. Therefore I must say, that while the LS is as smooth as butter and the backseat is amazing, i'd rather be behind the wheel of an RL anyday of the week.

But on another note, owning lexus would be fantastic

I think the RL is being compared to cars above it because the ones doing the comparison are doing it via "flagship vs flagship", and not so much by similarity between models.

BTW I just love their comment about the RL lacking interior room...yeah, compared to the full-size LS it does. But it's on par with the rest of the midsize class.

That's why I really think Honda/Acura should consider a full-size car: because they currently don't have one and our beloved RL literally does not measure up to a full-size car.

^ Rumor has it that they're working on one. Fullsize and V8...no word on whether it'll be RWD or AWD, though.

This is really interesting. The Lexus is clearly a higher-end car, but after viewing the poll results I see that the RL is in the lead (56% vs. 44%, 2027 votes).

Another TL owner here supporting my RL brothers. Right now it's still 56% to 44% in favor of the RL.

We recently picked up a brand new 06 LS430 to join the RL and our stable. Here's my quick comparision of pros and cons of both vehicles:

RL
- Ours seems to develop a new rattle every 5k miles, this latest one is the baby rattle sound somewhere in the dash.

- Rear passenger and trunk room feel tight when hauling more than 2 people around

- When passing or accelerating hard is when I wish for the torque and oomph of a V8 or FI.

- Road noise? Everyone complains about the road noise and compares the RL against the LS. The car is a bit noisier than the LS, but the LS's 18" SP5000's arent what I'd consider a super quiet or smooth riding tire either. Granted I sometimes wish it'd be quieter, but after taking my sister's 05 TL out for a spin, I'm satisfied with the RL's level of sound dampening.

- Price and bang for buck definitely go to the RL. We bought ours in the lower $40's last year and it's worth every penny. The LS on the other hand I feel a little bit differently about. I sometimes feel that the LS really isnt worth the premium over the RL.

LS
- The navigation and bluetooth system in this car sucks. While it's not as bad as the 01 S500 we had prior and still a bit more advanced than that of our 01 Landcruiser, it's still very similar to it, I really expected more. For example - when using a verbal commands, the LS would just show POI's instead of detailed descriptions of eateries and/or destinations. I also cant stand the fact that I need to pull over to use it! C'mon Toyota, integrate it with the passenger seat sensor to unlock the system while in motion!

- The interior of the car is totally uninspiring. The center stack looks and feels straight out of a Camry, but with wood trim. The traction control and sunshade buttons placement look like an afterthought. I wish the LS could come with the seat shape of the RL, but keep all it's options - like the two stage lumbar, adjustable rear cushion, and heated and COOLED seats.

- The exterior or the car I suppose is now considered a classic as the general shape hasnt changed since 1990. It's a very handsome vehicle, but not as pretty to the eye as the RL. I've already begun outlining the modifications to the car and I believe with a little bit of subtle work, it'll look great.

Things I'd like to take from each car to make the perfect car IMO:
LS seat options / RL seats / LS Leather
Rear wheel drive based SH-AWD
RL interior, LS space
RL fuel economy / LS motor (put in 18.8 gallons of fuel in today at $72 here in nyc today!)
RL Navigation
LS aftermarket support

We love the RL because it's a technologically advanced sports sedan, and we love the LS because it's such a buttery smooth cruiser. But to compare them both is almost laughable.

^^ So it seems as though the Nav hasn't gotten any better in the Toyota/Lexus cars. My '04 Land Cruiser has the Gen Iv Nav that is an upgrade over the on in your '01. The VR is worthless and has a fraction of the commands. I'm guessing your new LS has the new Gen . Nav, and it's still doesn't compare,

That's because the much older LS owners need space to store their walker.

Exactly. In our 01 Landcruiser, the nav was more gimmick-y than useful. Thought the G4 navi was supposed to be better, but all it is is the old nav with some voice commands sprinkled in.

I believe the newer navi is available in the IS, but not the GS/LS/LX.

Dude, you forgot the link.

Yet another TL owner showing some love for the RL. 52%-48% so far.

Let's go Acurazine! Help the RL get to the next level in the Ultimate Japanese Supercar division of the Showroom Showdown!

Just voted. 86% to 14%.

I thought the RL would have a tough time against the S2000. What I wouldn't give to have both in my garage at the same time, and with a TL to boot!

Looks like OneBigHomo (1SickLex) thinks that all the Acura owners around the world joined hands and cheated in order for the RL to advance in the polls. He even reported to Forbes that we cheated. To bad Forbes has been in love with the RL since it came out two years ago.

http://clublexus.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239971

Funny thing is that he has been kicked out of these forums countless times yet he keeps on returning with diffferent names to validate his insecurities.

Jeez. We don't have enough people on this part of the forum to get 8000 votes in. I fail to see how that could have happened. I don't have time to vote from my PDA, vote from all my machines, etc, and why would I want to anyway? 1sicklex has entirely too much time on his hands. He was actually a fine, contributing member here for a long time then totally turned everything into Lexus vs whatever and made life miserable enough for the admins that he was banned.
