Fog & High Beam Bulb Sizes?

The owners manual states how to replace these bulbs, but it does not state what sizes they are.

Searched a bunch of sites on the internet and I pulled up H11 in 55W for the fogs, can anyone confirm this?

On a side note, anyone have the Helms for this car yet?

I have the service manual. The electrical troubleshooting manual was on backorder and is again available, so I ordered one yesterday.

How much did you pay for the Helms service manual? Can you check to see what the bulb sizes are for the RL when you get a chance?

Thanks!

Here is some general information scarfed up from a quick look at the rather thick manual and some prices.

2005 RL Body Repair Manual: $44.00
2005 RL Service Manual: $69.00
2005 RL Tech Info Guide (disc): $50.00 (I haven't had a chance to look at it)
Shipping for above: $6.95

2005 RL Electrical troubleshooting: est. $65.00 +/- with shipping (not yet arrived)

headlight high beam: 12V-60 W(HB3)
headlight low beam: 12V-35 W (D2S) HID
fog lights (U.S. Model): 55 W (HII)

Service manual details step by step instructions on bulb changing and also headlight aiming (it's not clear which "headlights" the manual is referring to, however.) The headlight instructions are rather cryptic. Changing out bulbs appears to involve removing some stuff from the car to get at certain bulbs.

Caveat!: Service manual lists some serious warnings when fooling with the lighting system:

"A transient high tension (25,000 V) occurs at the bulb sockets or the high intensity discharge (HID) lamps when the combination light switch is turned ON. It may cause serious electrical shock or electrocution if you do not observe the cautions below."

"Never turn on the combination light switch before fitting the HID bulbs to their bulb sockets and completing the reassembly of the headlight assembly."

"Do not service the headlights assembly in wet conditions, such as rain or snow, near a sprinkler system, or when your hands are wet to prevent electrocution."

"Do not touch the serface (sic) of the HID bulbs with your bare hands and do not stain it with any oils and fats."

"Do not dissemble the inverter unit and the ignitor unit."

"Do not turn on the HID bulb by using a power source other than the battery mounted on your vehicle."

I haven't seen anything in a quick look at the manual to suggest what the bulb temps are...isn't there a thread on this site about the temps? I've seen a thread somewhere.

Hmm.. HB3 is a 9005/9006 bulb.

I'm going to place an order for a set of PIAA ultra white HB3's for the high's/DRL, and a set of H11's in ion (yellow) for the fogs. I will not be upgrading the D2S HID's, I'm very happy with those for the time being.

Thanks!

Correction, the HB3 bulb is a 9005, not a 9005/9006.

What will the new bulbs do...change the color and/or intensity?

I'd be interested in how to increase the brightness of the high beams for the RL and more closely match their color with the low beams, if anyone has experience with this and can advise.

This thread and the ones about tires on this site brought back memories of my first car....a 1965 Volvo 122S which I drove the last 4 years of college. I purchased the car in 1966, and the lady cried when she handed me the keys...her husband was returning to law school in Birmingham. They had to give up the car. That car now is sitting out in the yard under a hickory...in pretty sad shape...hasn't been driven since 1984, but is on my list of projects one of these days. It had over 300,000 miles when the speedometer quit. It'll have to be gutted...might have to call Colin Powell for advice. <g>

Right after acquiring the car, I removed the stock sealed beams and installed halogens. I put a light bar on the front bumper, mounted a couple of high intensity Carello quartz iodine driving lamps and installed a toggle switch (is there any other kind?) where I could reach it quickly. Never got around to putting on any fog lights...couldn't raise the money. The setup was totally illegal, of course. The Carellos had blue covers, and the only time I ever got stopped was by a patrolman who thought I had blue lights installed. Some jerk stole the covers in Oxford, Mississippi while the car was parked at the theatre downtown. Someone who knew me removed the covers and tossed them...no doubt...car was parked with headlights next to wall. I'm still mad.

While I was thrashing the car about throwing out those high beams, I also purchased a set of radials. At the time, radials were fairly new to the market and quite a hot item. Radials had to be "run in"...after installation, the tire was rotated in an attempt to match the high/low spots on the tire/rim for an even rotation. And, if not a really good match, the high spots were trimmed/buffed off! I've stuck with Michelins since then...oput some Dunlops on the Volvo once and threw them practically brand new under Daddy's house after going through the first rain storm...slippery.

All cars need light bars.

Heh.

I installed a pair of PIAA Ultra White HB3s in an attempt to more closely match the low beam color and intensity. It did make a difference over the OEM bulbs but not enough for me to be completely satisfied. The color temp is 4000K so I guess I need to find a bulb closer to the 4300K temp of the Xenons and perhaps a little higher wattage than 60W.

If anyone has had any luck with other bulbs, I would sure like to know it.

Frank, which ones did you install? Got the part number?

I'm thinking about trying the PIAA "Xtreme White 4150K" HB3s and H11s.

Meant to also include the PIAA Part No: 19615, Model No: H-251E. The temp is specified on the package as 4000K with 12v, 60W->120W, "Xtreme White Plus".

Has anyone tried Hoen? I'm very interested in the All-Weather for the fogs.
