extended warranty?

Planning on keeping the car that long? If so... while ordinarily I'd say no, given the sheer amount of technical gee-gaws on the RL, there's a lot of expensive stuff that could go very wrong... which would push me towards "Yes." One small-to-medium-sized repair on say the SH-AWD system could easily exceed $1500....

I paid $1,100 for an Acura Care 7yr.100K mile warranty.
It's always a gamble with warranties, but let me share a story. I purchased a 7yr/100k mile warranty for my 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser. Toyota's warranty is 3yr/36K mile bumper-to-bumper and 5yr/60k on the powertrain.
Last January the NAVI/multi-function display died on it.... at 40K miles, technically out of warranty coverage. Not only did the Nav not work, but the climate control was inoperable along with the stereo, back-up camera, and other stuff.
The part alone cost $5000!!!!! If I didn't have the warranty I was going to be stuck with a $5K+ repair bill on a 2 year old premium SUV. I think I got my money out of the warranty, and I still have another 60K miles to go.
If you're going to keep the car well past the warranty, I think it's money well spent, especially when you look at all the electronics and features on the car. Running up a $1K repair bill wouldn't take much.

Maybe it's a good idea to spend another grand on this car since I am planning on keeping it for at least 5-6 years...

I agree that if you're keeping the car past 4 years go with the extended warranty. Just think about all the potential problems that could occur with the electronics. Telescoping steering wheel, adaptive headlights, tilting side mirrors, power rear sunshade, etc. My philosophy has been that extended warranties in general are a marketing ploy but regarding the RL I believe that coverage of all the techie gizmos validates a warranty. It's partly because of those concerns that I am planning on selling my RL before the 4 year warranty is up.
