I have been able to get this to clear a few times by popping out the DVD and restarting, but it always comes back. It locks up my entire screen so nothing else can display. I've done a few searches but have not seen any exact scenario. What to do??
You need an update disc if you still had the original disc installed before you got, which looks like, the new 2012 disc. Tough to tell in the photo. I have one I'll sell you for what I paid for it on eBay if your interested.
Acura support told me it was likely the DVD player was malfunctioning and could not read the disc. And of course I should bring it to the stealership to get my pockets picked.
Here's the sequence of events:
1) When I turn the car on - this appears
Then after awile..it changes to this
The display is now locked and unusable.
I have tried removing the DVD - nothing changes.

The issue is either the disc is bad and can't be read or the navigation dvd drive is bad. As I told you already I have an old 4.13A disc that I will send you just pay me enough money for shipping. I've updated to a newer 2012 map disc and I will never use the 4.13A disc again. If you get mine and it still doesn't work then the issue is the navigation unit and it might need to be repaired.
After looking closer at the photo of your disc using my old 4.13a probably isn't worth a shot. Who ever owned the car before must have updated the system already when they installed that map disc. At least it looks like the disc you have is from 2012. If the system was working and all of a sudden it isn't my guess is there is something wrong with your dvd drive.
1. pull and clean the disc... look for scratches... polish it if there are any
2. reset the car at the battery...
3. Park the car in an open space and key in the codes while it looks for a signal
4. Start looking for a used drive in case none of that works.
I believe there are places that repair the drives but I don't know what the cost is. I agree that looking for a used drive is probably your best option. Either way it looks like it is going to cost between $300-400. There is a place on Ebay that repairs them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/REPAIR-YOUR-03-08-Acura-MDX-TSX-RL-TL-Navigation-DVD-Disc-Drive-GPS-NAVI-/121070416206?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c305bf14e&vxp=mtr
Not exactly cheap but an option.
Off topic... but on the same note... I would throw that thing in the garbage and use my cellphone before I replaced/repaired/spent any money on it at all. Just my
I feel the exact opposite of Heavy. My phone GPS works great when it works. If you ever been lost in the middle of no where with no cell phone service then you know what I'm talking about.
With that said when there is good cell phone service I do find it much easier to use my phone to look up an address. Searching for POI in the acura system can be very tedious.
I tried the battery disconnect and that did not resolve the issue.
I then called Acura again and they said I could remove the DVD system and that would stop the error message. It's pretty inaccessible so that would not be an easy task
I'm going to remove the DVD system tomorrow if it doesn't rain. I never travel to areas of no phone or data coverage so I will just use my Android for GPS until I can figure out what to do with the Nav box.
I updated my maps today with the firmware update...
1. turn the key to on(I)
2. insert firmware update disk (it started to download and then displayed msg to chk disc)
3. I removed the disc
4. turned key to off and turned it back on again to on (I)
5. inserted the updated map disc (downloading update msg appeared)
6. the system continued to update the maps
7. update completed.
The software was updated and the maps were updated.

I don't have an update disc, only the map disc. Which one did you use?

Was your navigation working with the disc you currently have and then suddenly stopped working? I believe that is what you said. If that is the case then your software was already updated and either your dvd unit or the map disc is bad.
UPDATE - it does appear that the DVD unit is bad. I got inside the trunk and disconnected the system only to find that the screen becomes blank. So no way of getting around repairing/replacing the unit if I want my screen to work.
Just get a Google Maps app on your cell phone. It's FAR better than this stupid DVD GPS system. I never use that GPS system any more!!
I do already use Android navigation. The problem is that when I disconnect the NAV DVD system, the console display loses power. So no other functions will work with it.
