Door Handle (TSB 08-059) not covered by AcuraCare

Hmmm, AcuraCare says they don't cover TSB 08-059

Apparently as it's a seal and is water damage.

Anyone else get this?

Well, in my case dealer told me not covered and I called Acura Care customer line and they also told me not covered. Water damage caused by a bad seal, not covered.

Seems kind of scammy for some of the companys (a well known company on this board) that sells AcuraCare one of their sell lines is:

"Acura Care's exclusionary coverage is so extensive that it will cover you whether you have a problem with your door handle or you simply lock your keys in"

using a well known issue which they know isn't covered.

Maybe ask your dealer if they purposefully neglect to say anything about water damage to get it covered. Or are you under regular warranty period?

Mine was covered. The diagnostic is that the door handle was shorting out.

Acura would not pay on my 2006 RL. I think I had 90k miles when the pass door sensor went out. If I remember correctly it was an $800 job and the replacement door handle would have to be painted to match the body color.

I wish Acura would cover since it is a common failure, but I guess at some point they have to draw a line where there is no longer factory coverage.

I don't recall them painting mine. I think they actually come in the colors.

I've had each side replaced at least 3-4 times. The most recent time I was well past the extended warranty and it was covered under my AcuraCare coverage.

Acura Care covered my RL door handle replacement two weeks ago - drivers side, new part installed, no problem. I am out of factory warranty and I have 63,000 miles on the car.

Clearly there is not conformity among dealers in covering this. It seems that as there's a TSB on it, that it should be covered.

Funny, had my car in for other reasons and they called me today because they needed to keep the car for an extra day or two to replace the handle. I have the extended warranty.

My dealer said ( since I have the oem extended warranty), they should cover the handles/sensors. Has anyone had an issue while they are hosing off their car, the doors lock and unlock while the stream of water hits the window?!! Seems like an internal seal has failed. We'll wait and see if they honor warranty replacement!?

Is the fob in your pocket when this occurs? If so then think about it. The water hitting the door handle emulates you touching the door handle. This has always happened to me. If you leave the fob in the car or move it further away while washing the car you won't have that occur.

Does anyone know if there is a way to shut off the door handle sensors or if it's even possible? I know you can change whether it opens the drivers door or all the doors. but i didn't see anything in the owners manual about turning off this feature.

I have an '05 RL and JUST had my driver's side handle replaced about 3 weeks ago, covered under the AcuraCare extended...no questions asked.

And, the handles come pre-painted, they are not painted by the dealer, so anyone claiming they need to paint them is scamming for extra bucks. Here are the numbers from Delray Acura for the 2006 right side, for example:

72141-SJA-A12ZC ( NIGHTHAWK BLACK PEARL )
72141-SJA-A12ZD ( PREMIUM WHITE PEARL )
72141-SJA-A12ZE ( GRAPHITE PEARL )
72141-SJA-A12ZH ( ROYAL RUBY RED PEARL )
72141-SJA-A12ZJ ( DESERT MIST METALLIC )
72141-SJA-A12ZA ( METEOR SILVER METALLIC )
72141-SJA-A12ZB ( OPULENT BLUE PEARL )
72141-SJA-A12ZF ( CELESTIAL SILVER METALLIC )
72141-SJA-A12ZG ( MEDIUM SILVER METALLIC )

They run about $200.

I've had my passenger's door outer handle replaced under factory warranty (twice, if I remember correctly). I noticed recently that it would not lock the doors. It will unlock them, but not lock. I could understand a bad seal being the culprit. Still, not an excuse to deny the work, especially under warranty. I'll wait until my wife complains about it not working before I pursue a remedy, as it is her daily driver.

Interesting. I called AcuraCare direct number and they said it's not covered specifically because there IS a TSB and it related to seals and water damage.

What kind of circular logic is that? "The warranty you paid for covers you except when there's a known defect in the product, and then it doesn't?"!

Here is my sad story about 08-059:
Im a second owner or 06RL, vehicle locked up and would not start - of course dealer charged my $105 for diagnostics to plugin computer and get that error code, thanks Acura Continental in Anchorage, Alaska. Secondly, service rep stated that they will charge me for paint job to the handle... what??? they all come color coded, in my case it was 72141-SJA-A12ZC ( NIGHTHAWK BLACK PEARL ). To make long story short, I spend few hours on the phone with Acura UnCare reps and was told to wait. The outcome this morning is that Acura will not pay or even copay for the part (I offered to pay for the labor). In addition to all of this, the only Acura dealer stated "We dont have rental department, and loaners are out about 3 weeks ahead - you should schedule this ahead of time" Yes, thank you very much, I will plan to have my vehicle disabled on the 23, and let's see - I'll call and schedule 3 weeks before. I'm extremely dissatisfied with Acura at this time, their promise of exceptionally high standardts of service are bogus. *Owned TL 05 before, familiar with in and outs of warranty and disclaimers.
--------- Cost: $655(part/labor) + $110 (diag) = $765

Akski, that story is absolutely disgusting. My sympathy goes out to you -- I can only imagine how frustrated you're feeling.

I, too, had a very unsatisfactory experience a year or two ago with AcuraCAre phone reps. They're not Honda/Acura employees, just flunkies working for a hired third-party firm that serves numerous automakers (although, evidently, not their customers).

I can't guarantee that documenting your story and escalating it in writing to Acura Corporate will get you satisfaction, but in my case it did help. Do keep us posted on how it goes.

TonyCD, if you don't mind, did you receive an answer from corporate regarding your issue, or was the satisfaction presented in a different form? My current frustration is over the threshold level and I'm launching an online resource tellaboutyouracura.com (registered today) where users will be able to select Year/Model and pin point weak spots of their vehicles. Also, I would encourage any thoughts or suggestions how to make Acura accountable for known issues of their equipment.

Akski, my problem was of a somewhat different nature than yours, but I did receive an answer directly from corporate.

By way of background, I had gotten horrendous service over the AcuraCare line when stranded on the roadside on a business trip. They denied me warranty coverage (I had an extended warranty, which shouldn't even have mattered since I was still covered by the ORIGINAL warranty), making me pay via credit card before they'd issue a tow truck. Then they didn't get it there for an hour, causing me to miss the closing time of the local Acura dealer and stranding me from getting home for an additional 24 hours.

I laid out the whole infuriating story in a detailed letter to Acura Customer Care in California. An individual gentleman responded to me by phone and in writing. He apologized profusely, and not only made sure I didn't get charged for the tow, but reimbursed me by check for the extra night in a hotel, exactly as the warranty promised, then followed up to make sure I was satisfied. Thanks to him, I was.

Not everybody gets such excellent complaint resolution, but it is worth a shot. Best of luck in getting the satisfaction you deserve with your problem.
