Crazy AC problem
I have a stock 06 RL with almost 100k miles and a couple days ago I went out to get in my car and noticed the AC wasn't working. With it near 100 degrees I tried cycling the AC on and off and setting the climate control to "low" and nothing I did worked. Once I saw it wasn't gonna work I turned it off and when I got to work I popped the hood trying to see if I could see if the compressor was working or not. As soon as I pushed in the knob to turn on the AC I heard the compressor click and come on and almost immediately the AC was cold as ice. I left it running with the AC on and listened to the compressor and I noticed no unusual noises. When I came back to get in from work it worked great and worked great the rest of the night. Today it worked great until I cut it off for 10 minutes and I come back out and the AC again is dead. I tried for 30 minutes to get it to work and nothing helped.....the screen on the nav shows the AC is on but the compressor isn't. Over the winter the door sensors, power mirrors, and automatic light sensor all quit at one time and I figured i'd unhook the battery just in the 1 in a million chance it would fix it and low and behold everything started back working and has never done it again. Remembering that, I decided to unhook the battery and when I hooked it back up immediately the compressor kicked back on. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I'm assuming it's an electrical problem because if it was the compressor then unhooking and reconnecting the battery wouldn't make it come back to life. I should also say that when it's on it works great. It makes no odd noises and even with it 99 degrees here the past few days it easily cools the cabin to 68 degrees. Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

It doesn't HAVE to be an electrical problem, per se. You could have a part that is working itself into a stuck state and removing power only reset that state. However, I don't know enough about A/Cs to be of any real help. Sorry.

It is the field coil weakening on the compressor clutch. Research past post. Lots of good information out there. i replaced the field coil myself. Most shops want to replace entire compressor (expensive). Field coil around $80. No evac of system required however working in tight spots is.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't been around in a few days but knock on wood the AC is still working fine and dandy. I just looked at the new posts to find several new AC problems which is kinda scary to say the least. From what I've read it looks like stew160 is right...my problem sounds a lot like what others are experiencing with the field coil. I'm praying the incident was just a glitch, if not I'll be getting my hands dirty before long.

Funny (or not), the AC on my 05 went out yesterday. Turned it off for about 10 mins and then turned it back on and it worked. I'm still under warranty and am bringing it in to the dealer.
So now I have an intermittent problem. Will the dealer still be able to tell that the field coil is failing if the AC doesn't cut out while they have it? Are any codes given off? Is there a way to test the field coil to show that it may be failing?
I know the 05s are notorious for the AC problem and am glad it is dying under warranty.

My AC is dead while i am crossing the broader
(Fort Erie/Buffalo), I am not sure if the x-ray or scanners in the custom have anything to do with it or not. I bought it to a local garage in Rochester, took them 5 hours, and still they can't figure out what is the problem, at the end of the day, they were telling me to replace the compressor ($1000 for the part!!!
) and they are not 100% sure that will fix the problem!! While I was waitting for them to check on my car, I was reading the threads on this site, and I showed one of the guy that the field coil could be the case
, but he doesn't listen to me
... Now i am back to Canada, I just order the coil online for $87, gonna have my buddy to install it once it arrive, I will poste the result it once I get the part.

Well guys after a week after my "glitch" my AC is back out again. I tried to unhook the battery and hook it back up like I did last time and this time it did not work. Of course I have the busiest week in months this week so it will probably be the weekend before I can do any diagnostics. The only thing that seems different in my case is that the temperature doesn't seem to make a difference. Most people are saying there's will work in the morning and shut off once the temps get up, mine works as much while it's hot as when its cold. I will check the relay in the morning and i'm not much sure where to go after that.

I forgot to ask but I knew when I bought this car that the 05's had problems with the AC but mine is an 06 and most of the posts I see are all of 05's. Did they not change the design or redo what was failing for the 2006 model year?

I can't speak to design changes, but every model year will have A/Cs that fail. It is just that the 2005 MY seems have them more frequently.

For those that have already bought and installed the stator...can you give a link or recommend a site you bought yours from. It's way late, I'm dead tired, and I'm second guessing if the parts I see is actually what I need to buy. I'm wanting to hurry up and get it here so I can hopefully get AC again. My compressor won't engage at all cold or hot so is it possible it's the compressor clutch instead? Is there a way to test to see which it is? I will order something in the morning when I'm awake....any ideas would be appreciated.

I had ordered my stator from this site.
www.AcuraOEMParts.com
And search for part number: 38924-RJA-A01
I had paid $91, which including S&H already. Good luck!

There is a way to confirm it.
Here is a C&P:
The Acura tech site and found the following...
Poor A/C Performance or A/C Doesn’t Work
Currently Applies To: ’05–06 RLs
Got a vehicle in your shop because the A/C runs poorly or doesn’t work at all? A bad field coil in the
A/C compressor clutch could be the culprit.
To determine if this is the case, connect the HDS, go to the DATA LIST, and monitor the A/C switch and
A/C clutch relay signals. If the DATA LIST indicates that the A/C switch and A/C clutch relay are on—and
the A/C compressor clutch isn’t working—refer to step 4 on page 21-91 of the ’05–08 RL S/M and measure
the resistance of the field coil. (Online, enter keyword COMPRESSOR CLUTCH and select A/C
Compressor Clutch Check from the list.) If the resistance isn’t to spec, replace the field coil with
P/N 38924-RJA-A01.

Had my AC fixed today under warranty. Even though it was an intermittent problem, dealer could tell there was a problem. Replaced Compressor, compressor clutch and stator. Receipt reads $1625, including $310 for labor.
Extended warranty $900, total repairs in three years $4800, 9 months to go on warranty.....Priceless.
