Cleaning Headlights

I own a 2005 Acura RL and the headlights are getting foggy. What do you guys suggest for cleaning and how to clean a foggy headlight. Thanks.

The easiest is to take it somewhere.

Depending on how bad they are you could attempt a home kit.

Amazon.com: Sylvania Headlight Restoration Kit: Automotive Amazon.com: Sylvania Headlight Restoration Kit: Automotive

I used that kit and it worked great. Follow the video and make sure to apply the last step as smoothly as possible.

Wet sand, then clear coat.
This way they will not fade out again two months later.

Essential the Sylvania kit includes different levels of fine grit sand paper. You clean the lenses and sand them using progressively less aggressive sand paper. When you are done the kit includes a clear coat that needs to be applied as smoothly as possible because you only have one shot to apply it.

There is a great video on Amazon/You tube that shows the procedure. It isn't difficult but time consuming.

This topic has almost as many hits as "dead battery".

I've been told you can put opti-coat on top of it once you clear them out to protect the headlights from hazing out 2 months later. I haven't attempted this, so I can't vouch for it.

Mine were horrible too. I just went cheap and used the Turtle Wax kit. I'm sure it is less than permanent and will be back soon but I'm happy with the "temporary" results though. I did them about two months ago and so far they are still clear.

Before (yes my tape job sucked lol)

That looks great, Stephanie. IIUC, the root cause of the hazing is prolonged exposure to sunlight. If you restore them and keep the car covered from the sun, I wouldn't expect it to come back.

I read not to clean them ... but just wondering if anyone else has haze on the CMBS front sensor cover like I do?

I am getting the ACC/CMBS warnings (this can be another thread) so wondering if that could cause an issue as our cars age (2006).

The grill shield is just plastic. Its only purpose is to protect the CMBS unit behind it. Many have done the same restoration to their shield as their headlights without issue.
