Burning Oil?

So the MID came up for an oil change and we let it run down to 0%. Went to get the oil changed and the dip stick was mostly dry, with a tad bit of oil on the tip. Estimated 5000 miles on the oil.

It's been dealership serviced, 05 with 80K on it. All proper service has been done. We are running 5w20 dino oil.

Questions
1. Anyone else have this problem?
2. Think the dealership failed to fill it right to the top and we burned a little?
3. What type of burn per 1000 miles are people seeing?
4. Should we consider switching to a 5w30?

I'm going to keep monitoring it, this is our first honda to ever burn oil. Even our S2000 doesn't consume this much oil.

Admittedly this RL sees vtec on just about every merge ramp. Is 50/50 on city to freeway.

I've never had the oil tested for breakdown. Car otherwise runs great. On a 480 miles one day business trip car averaged 25.3mpg at 75-80mph through the mountains and back.

Thoughts?

1) Do you have any visible leaks or drips? 2) Do you have any smoke coming out of the tail pipes?

You can also pull a spark plug and see if it's oily. I seriously doubt the rings have any significant wear at 80K miles.

Just monitor at 1000 mile intervals and let us know.

My 05 never burned a drop till it hit about 50k, and then the consumption was noticible. Have similar mileage to yours. I had even sent a sample in to Blackstone, and got a very positive report. Some cars are just going to experience wear at at different rate than others. You can do a leakdown test and narrow it down, but at the end of the day, are you going to tear down an engine to rebuild the top end because it consumes a $3 quart of oil every 5000 miles or so? I would not overthink it too bad unless the consumption gets really egregious. This could have been predestined from the factory because somebody skimped on assembly lube. (assuming they don't dunk pistons upside down in coffee cans full of 50w to assemble!)

Mine does not burn a drop but I can tell you that up to 1 quart per thousand miles is considered the max limit for oil consumption for most manufacturers.

Going from past experience all engines are different even in the same car. I had a 2003 s2000 and it would burn oil like crazy when I was hard on it but when I would keep it under 5000 rpms for a few weeks it would only burn a few ounces and I drive a lot.

With the thin 20 wght. oil you don't have to warm-up a car.
