BMW M5 rims on a 05 RL

I'm sick of my stock rims and i think they look wrong with the RL.
The design and size just don't fit that car, and i thought that Acura would at least offer 18 inch standard and 19 optional, but no we get the same size that the RSX and civic get, ain't that a shame! a 50k+ flagship sedan with 17
Its too late anyway since i already own the vehicle, and i didn't really like the 18 chrome look accessory rim offered by Acura.
The other problem is Honda has changed the bolt pattern on the RL to what BMW use 501/20 which made the rims list even shorter and what even worse is the brake clearance
I'm wondering if anybody had tried to use BMW M5 rims on the RL because i'm about to try after replacing the center cap of course.
Also what do you guys think of having the side mirror turn signals on when the headlight unit is on just like the Mercedes Maybach?

Absolutely not on the mirrors. The whole purpose of those mirrors is to serve as turn signals.

As for the rims, I would say that's your call. It would almost be sacrilege in my opinion though...

I don't like the mirror idea but the rims idea is great. I would love to see that picture. Keep us posted!

Are you saying that BMW wheels fit the RL. If that's the case then the AC Schnitzer wheels should fit. That would be so cool.AC Schnitzer Wheels

or any of these 5 series wheels 5 series OEM wheels

The RonJon wheels look good. I'd leave BMW wheels to BMW.

Well would it be possible to modify the mirror lights to be green (or blue) neon? Couple that with swapping the wheels out - preferably 14" and extended outside the wheelwells by a good 6" and we are talking serious pimpdaddy ridin'! Of course this whole look would be ruined if somebody had installed the modest rear spoiler, you would definitely need some custom spoiler that extended above the roofline so you could catch all the bras and panties that would be thrown your way. Don't forget to either remove the Xenon's and replace with 'blue' lights or add some filter to make the light xtra blue.

Or . . . how about . . . . the car is fine as it is without applying any crap like making the turn signals always-on? Just because MB does it doesn't mean it's right, you know.

Edit - for ppl reading this after the fact I'm not ranting on CGTSX2004, only on the content that (s)he was responding to; me and CGTSX2004 are on the same page.

I'm confused by the entire first part of your post...was that supposed to be funny??

Regardless, I stand by my statement. Lights that should always be on are parking lights, not turn signals. Since on the RL, those mirror lights serve as turn signals, they should not be on all the time.

Sarcasm. It's OK, I lived in Northern Virginia a number of times, I know what it's like to have one's senses dulled.

Judging by your age, you'd know more about dulled senses than I would...

Hey CGT! That means I'm more dulled than Karl? Well, my wife would agree with that. My kids too. But do I have to add you to the list too?!

Well, since you don't state your age, that's a kind of CS statement, CGTSX.

Supposing I don't have too much to do at work, I should be able to accomplish it by COB today.

The M5 wheels would not fit, BMW uses 5x120 size wheels, acura uses 4x114.3

The lug pattern isn't the same.

Tecworld, you are mistaken. I can definately confirm that the bolt pattern for the new RL is 5x120. Watch out for some of the online wheels stores 'cos they also have it wrong.

For anyone interested in aftermarket wheels you should be looking for wheels with a high offset (35-45 range) and large X-factor (caliper clearance).

wrong, its 5x120 for the RL and ONLY the RL as of now. the TL, TSX, RSX, MDX, NSX are 5x114.3.

also, I doubt the M5 wheels would fit due to the width and offset.

Exactly!!! You know I wish Acura would just publish the specs for aftermarket wheels and be done with it!!! I tired of guessing at what the offset is for the various sizes (for 18",19", & 20" wheels)...I mean is that asking too much???

AcuRL it's not that simple.

The stock offset is +55, which is not a very typical offset available in any aftermarket wheels. You will find typical "high" offset wheels (sometimes labeled as FWD wheels) are in the range of 35-45mm.

Does this mean they won't fit? ...again, it's just not that simple.

Increasing the offset puts the wheel closer to the inside of the wheel well, and the reason that high offset is needed is to position the wheel such that it doesn't stick out too much...i.e. it looks close to the original stock position.

Now an extra consideration that you must watch out for is that you need the spokes of the wheel to clear the large brake calipers on the front wheels. While you will not find many specifications on it, there is a parameter for each wheel known as the X-factor, which is the caliper clearance factor of the spokes. You need to get wheels with a high X-factor to stand any chance of clearing those huge calipers at the front.

Take a look at this thread from another RL forum, we had a good discussion on aftermarket wheels...

goldmember,

Thanks, but if I got it right you used PhotoShop to fit the wheels on the RL, right?
Do you have any information on whether these wheels will actually fit in real life? I know the bolt pattern is the same, but the offset can make a big difference. What is the offset on these wheels, and do you know the X-factor (clearance of the spokes over the brake caliper)?

The M5 uses some seriously wide wheels. They wouldn't fit without some modifications to the RL.

I stand corrected and I'm very surprised as I've known Honda/Acura for 10 years and they have never used gone past 114.3. I'm happy about this though, because it opens up a whole new possibility for wheel selection. Thanks guys.
