Another Extended Warranty Question

I know I talked with some of you about this in previous thread, but I'm approaching decision time and am still unsure, so am looking for any additional input you all may have.

Given the high-tech components on the RL, I have pretty much decided an extended warranty is worth it, considering I plan to drive it to 100K miles or more. But at what cost is what I'm struggling with.

I spoke with Acura headquarters in CA. They confirmed that if you live in FL, you must buy AcuraCare extended warranty from an authorized dealer in FL. And all dealers must sell at the same price.

That is why in FL, the prices are so unbelievably high (no competition), which makes my decision much tougher.

I bought preowned 05 last month with around 23K miles on it. The AcuraCare 5yr/84K, no deductible extended warranty is being offered through end of Feb. by various FL dealers at $2660 plus tax for an 05 with mileage not exceeding 30K.

I believe that would take me to 5 years from the day I buy the warranty or to 107K miles (23 + 84), whichever comes first. Is that correct?

My last car, a 2000 Infiniti I30, I drove to 144K miles and only spent about 1K for non-regular maintenance repairs after it went out of warranty. But it wasn't nearly as high-tech as RL.

Any advice?

I'm pretty sure that an extended warranty is not additive, ie, yours would give you a TOTAL of 5 years and 84k miles, not the higher number that results from adding the 5/84 to your current age/mileage.

Correct. I suppose your only other choice would be aftermarket BUT I have had problems in the past with second-party warranties.

I believe the most bang for your buck is to buy just before out of warranty. I presently have 49,077 miles on my 2003 Acura MDX. It was bought in June 2003. I have already spoke to Tim regarding extended warranty and will be buying when car reaches 49,999 and before June.

I don't know about Florida, but it seems that you should be able to buy from any dealer. I am in NJ and bought from these guys, for $100 less than was quoted me locally.

I believe Acurafox is correct. California is another weird place like Florida when buying warranty. You can only buy from California based or a company that does business in California like Acura Care. I presently have a 2003 MDX which was bought in June 2003. I spoke to Ray at Honda Acura World which has the best price I found. Car presently has 49,077 miles. I must purchase before June 2007 and before reaches 50,000 miles. I am looking at extended warranty of 48,000 miles and 48 months for $1800 ($100 deductable). So if I buy say next month and car has 49,900 miles. It will give me 48 months from that date and 97,900 miles.

I'm no lawyer, but it sure seems to me that Florida's laws are potentially in conflict with several federal laws that address price fixing and anti-trust practices. It would be pretty easy to prove that this restriction ALWAYS results in a higher price for the Florida consumer-a quick Google search an a few printouts of price quotes will capture the relevant cost data. Maybe this is an issue that is just waiting for the right advocate to crusade against.

But website says, "An example: If your Acura has 45000 miles and you buy the 1 yr / 12k miles Plan on a "certain day" 2007. You will be covered until you either reach 57000 miles or until "certain day" 2008. Whichever occurs first, mileage or date."

So that implies you DO add the number of miles in the extended warranty (i.e. 84K in the one I'm considering or 12K in the example above) to the current mileage you have on your vehicle. Correct?

Yes, you add the miles and time to the standard factory warranty. For example, if you purchase an AcuraCare 7 year/100,000 mile warranty, you are adding 3 years and 50,000 miles to the 4 year, 50,000 mile factory warranty. You are not adding an additional 7 years and 100,000 miles.
