ANC...... what the real info is
First off Automatic Noise Cancelling cannot be turned off.
It is not controlled by any menu selectable item.
And, despite what the salesman, told me ANC is on whether the aduio system is on or off. It is an intregal function of the cars noise supression system and the car sounds awful when it is not functioning. Want proof? Just put your finger over the round hole (microphone) just back from the rear window sunshade switch. Try doing it in all sorts of situations including the car at idle. With the microphone blocked the system no longer has low frequency supression capability.
Pretty impressive!
Gets rid of hundreds of pounds of sound insulation and uses the existing sub woofer.

Yes, it is very impressive technology.
Somebody please tell me what audio pilot is.....
Push the "audio" button
Push the round button downwards (so you can get to the other menus)
Go to "sound"
Go down the menu to "audio pilot."
You can turn this on and off.
Read the description = "Audio pilot noise compensation technology. Reduces the effects of outside noise"

Increases the volume of the audio system to compensate for outside noise.

But as far as your post, yes it is impressive - I had done that on the test drive after somebody had suggested trying that.

Auto Pilot increases the volume of the sound system to compensate for road noise. It can be turned on or off on the audio setup screen.
Active Noise Cancellation is a full time system that cancells out low frequency road noise by generating sound waves 180 degress out of phase.
It can not be turned off and works whether the audio system is on or off.

Sorry to have thrown that a little off topic earlier.
I would be curious to see how much louder it actually is when you cover up the mic (in dbs). I know our ears can simply tell us, but an actual number would be interesting to see.

I have a sound meter if I can remember to put it in the car.

I thinkt hey took out a lot of excess in material where other manus would ahve put it and they possibly lightened up the materials in other non-key areas.
Part of me likes it but part me likes having the material there rather than relying on an electronic system to do this job as the system could break and the car would sound horrible if it broke.

I agree....but it is cool technology!
I bet in the future this white noise technology will be expanded & used by other automakers.
Nice to see the RL is 1st. using this cutting edge technology (at least on autos).

What are the chances that the ANC could have a negative impact on certain low frequencies that could be generated while listening to the audio system ? It would seem that the ANC works in the low audible range and it could possibly overlap part of the low range generated by a music source.

I did a measurement:

Check out the Bose Noise cancelling headphones if you have any doubts about the technology. They make a plane trip almost silent.
The phones also work without audio input, just turn them on.
