AFS - Is there something wrong
AFS - Is there something wrong
I noticed last night when I was starting my car (I have headlights on Auto) that only the right headlight swiveled during the startup test. I could have sworn both headlights moved through their full range when yuo start the car. Can someone confirm that. It seems like the left HID light is moving left when I turn left but I can't be sure. Does the right light move left also when you make a left turn?
Only the right (passenger side) light swivels after the ignition is turned on in the systems test. The system is not fully activated until the car exceeds 12mph and has traveled 66 feet from stop.
Only one light swivels at a time. In a right hand turn, the right light pivots, the left is stationary.
In left turns, the left light pivots, and the right light remains stationary. However, the left light swivel will only occur when the car is in motion. If you make a left turn from a standstill, it remains stationary to avoid blinding oncoming traffic.
The right light will pivot when making a right turn from a stop.

Having the right light only swivel on startup at night is by design. Acura does not want an oncoming car blinded by the AFS swiveling on the left side on start up, if you are, say, parked on the street curb.

Thanks for the info. Just curious, where did you read about this? If it's true then my system is probably working. Seems odd that only the right headlight swivels at startup. Can't quite figure out the reasoning for that. Like I said, it seemed the like the left light was moving fine during driving so I wasn't sure if that was a symptom of a problem.

Here are some operating
characteristics of the AFS:
The system requires an
initialization period. It does not
begin to operate until you have
driven the vehicle a short distance.
At a stop, the right headlight turns
right when you turn the steering
wheel to the right. But the left
headlight does not turn left when
you turn the steering wheel to the
left. This prevents the left
headlight from pointing at
oncoming traffic.
AFS is turned off when the shift
lever is in the R position
Agreed. I've read that also. I was assuming TampaRL was deducing the left lights startup behavior from that text. Bob said it's in the manual. The light DOES seem to be swiveling when I drive, so maybe it is supposed to hold stationary when starting.
Somebody turn their headlights on tomorrow morning and then start the car. If you are in a garage it's easy to see the movement on the wall in front of you. Let me know if your left light stays stationary. That's the best way to confirm this, I suppose.

My left light is stationary when I start up the car, the right swivels. Thats what prompted me to look in the manual last fall because until then I assumed the left light was supposed to swivel at a stop.
Chas' referennce is indeed what I recall reading.
