I am thinking of adding the back up sensors. Has anyone done that and if so, what do you think? Dealer is asking for $1.013. Thanks in advance for any comments.

 

I have them and I think they are very helpful, especially for parallel parking. Sometimes it is hard to hear them over the radio, though.

Yes, the $1,013 price includes labor.

 

That price seems steep for some reason.

I think the cost of the sensors were around $500.
I am amazed that you would be charged another $500
for install -- but then again, dealer prices are always
gouged.

 

I love mine too. Having a "lack-of-height" problem (can't see crap out the rear window), it makes parking much easier.

 

That is too much $$$. Parts needed are under $400 dealer cost, & I see dealers asking from $600 to $800 for installation, parts & labor inclusive.

I saw one Acura dealer website that has a list of RL accessories available, and they had the sensor package listed at $600 & change.
If you need, I will find it for you so you can show your dealer what a ripoff he is!

You can go to the ACURA website and build an RL.

When you get to the accessories area you can select
BACKUP SENSOR and it will give you a price.

actually quoted me under that amount when I inquired.

 

At a cost of $1k I would suggest getting the nav-tv adapter and installing a rearview camera. It may still be cheaper than that 1k.

 

 

Re the $1,103 price: I called three dealers and that's the lowest quote I got. I was told that the price posted on Acura's webiste does not include a "special attachment". I do agree that the labor charge seems excessive but I do not know where else to go for installation. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

As far as the camera, it is not an acura option. It is aftermarket. I personally used the nav-tv adapter sold by www.avelectronic.com; however, there are other people who make a system for the car. It was roughly 550 for that one, and was fully plug and play. (except for the power wires of course). I unplugged the harness from the back of the DVD drive and plugged in the adapter unit into it. Then ran the power wire to the fuse box and grounded the black wire of course.

As far as the camera, you will have to look around to find something you like. I had the license plate frame camera and it worked well. I drilled a hole in the trunk lid to run the wire inside then sealed it with 3m strip caulk. It needed power and ground. Grounded the black wire to the fram of the car, then the power I connected to the reverse light. So, whenever you put the car in reverse, it would turn on the camera on the nav screen.

If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, you could go to a reputable shop in the area - take them the parts and have them install it. The camera was roughly 300. So total was 850+shipping. Installation would be fair at around 150 (just a guess).

With this option, you could hookup a dvd player, playstation, xbox, etc etc to use on your nav screen. I am STRONGLY opposed to anybody using it while driving. I had it setup so I could use it while driving - and I tried once - thinking I would just listen to the audio; however, it was far too distractign, so I turned it off. I can see it easily causing an accident.

 

Did you see this part on the website:

I believe the attachment costs about $500 by itself.

 

The backup sensor attachment from acuarparts247.com is $182.51, the buzzer is 52.63, the backup sensors themselves are 338.70

Do you know if plugging the adapter unit into the DVD drive will void Acura's warranty on the DVD unit and/or the NAV system? Maybe I am worrying too much???

 

It will only if they can prove your device caused damage to it. But, here is the great thing about the plug and play. If something goes wrong with your dvd drive or nav system, just pull out your nav-tv adapter. They will never know it was there.

 

Didn't realize the RL didn't have backup sensors. How cheap is that! I thought they were gimmicky toys until I was involved in a mutual rear-end to rear-end in a parking lot a few weeks ago
