Usually around 100k miles, the valve clearance on most tends not to be too far out of spec. Most people will not be able to tell the difference if they were just barely out. Usually around 150k miles is when you really start to notice a difference if they have never been done. When they get too tight, fuel consumption goes up caused by running richer, and will eventually misfire at idle. Depending on the generation of model, the PCM will more closely monitor excessively lean or rich condition due to emissions regulations. The 1st gen MDX will sit there and misfire all day while the 2nd gen will set a lean condition or rich condition code that will turn the CEL on way before it gets too rich or lean to start misfiring and ruining the converters. It's a good rule of thumb to get the valves clearance checked/adjusted at 100k but not necessary. You won't save any labor by doing the timing belt replacement during the valve clearance adjustment because you don't have to have the timing belt covers off in order to see the cylinder markings on the front cam.
