2008 RL Gas Milage??

Hello,

I am thinking about purchasing a 2008 RL with 45000 miles on it and I am curious about what kind of gas mileage that I can expect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I have an '05 and with reasonably conservative 90% freeway driving, I get 23.5 over a tank.

The most I've personally gotten is 26 - 27 on a 100% freeway trip.

But this can drop to 19 if it is all stop and go. The RL is a heavy car that takes a lot of fuel to get moving.

Thank you for the reply...my 06 TL was totaled last week, and I looked at a few 09 TL's, and the grill is just hideous....I would love to have a 2012 TL, but I don't want a big car payment....the dealer has this clean 2008 RL, and I think that's what I am going to get.

Day to day I get 22.5mpg on average with 18's and no mods.

I've had upwards of 30mpg on trips averaging 75+mph and a heavy foot will easily get you less than 20mpg

Thanks heavy_rl.....I appreciate the imput, I got around 23 combined with my 06 TL 6speed with a heavy right foot.
If I get this car I will learn not to be as heavy on the gas pedal....if I could get around 22 combined in the RL I would be really happy

I have an '05 RL, I drive about 10 miles to and from work up some pretty good sized hills and about a million traffic lights - if i'm gentely, i get about 17mpg, but on the interstate/highway i'm seeing the same number as everyone else who has posted here...

28 if you can go 60 mph without stopping. 22 with mostly highway and 19 in suburban areas.

The onboard computer tells me that my average speed driving around San Diego is 29 - 30 mph and that I get an average of 22 - 23 mpg. It used to be a shade higher before the schools went back and the morning traffic got snarled up again! I drive pretty conservatively. I have an '08.

I agree with the comments about highway mileage, but my in-town mileage is way worse, and I think I'm not alone. I've seen 16-17 in typical non-highway driving, and I've seen as bad as 14 in winter stop-and-go.

You gotta remember, this is a 4000-pound, 290-hp car with all-wheel drive. Given that, the mileage is pretty good. With no direct injection, turbos, hybrid tech, 7-speed or CVT transmissions, you can't repeal the laws of physics.

Just wanted to add some stats to my earlier post - my average speed is 19mph @ 16.7mpg. Like i said in my earlier post, I drive about 7 minutes each way to work every weekday and have about 6 or 7 (ok not a million) traffic lights on the way so there's a lot of sitting and not moving. Also - my car is 2005 RL with 117k miles. Bought it about 2 months ago and LOVE it.

A few months ago I was returning from Colorado to Texas from vacation. Going 80mph with three people and luggage. Averaged 29.9mpg for over 760 miles.

Well, that's cuz your car is white. Eased the burden on the air conditioner. :.)

Just purchased a 2008 RL with 29k mi two weeks ago and I am averaging 18.8mpg according to the onboard computer. I drive approximately 30 miles a day round trip. In the morning it's mostly street light to street light, and in the afternoon it's 70+mph on the highway. This is all on 91 octane in NJ. I had it up to almost 22mpg, but I guess my foot is getting a little power happy.

With the considerable drop in elevation and the fact that the wind is almost always blowing from CO to TX, this isn't that big of a surprise. Glad to know it can be done though.

Trip A was from Chicago to Ohio, Trip B was my entire trip From Va to Niagara, through Canada, and back down.

Not sure where this one was along that trip

Not to rain on the parade, but I'd answer the OP's question with "Less than you might want/expect" (for a car this size).

My workday commute mpg (stop-n-go crosstown) with A/C is about 14.6 mpg; 16 without A/C. The car does much better on long trips: in the mid 20's and above. My around-town mpg did go down about 1.5-2mpg after going to the A-Spec wheel/tire combo. On the other hand, I'm usually only filling up once every 2 weeks, so a tank lasts awhile.

Any car will have it's "downside", and that's pretty much the only one that preys upon my mind. Up to you whether the (extensive) plusses of the car outweigh the somewhat poor mpg around town.

Yeah, I found it on my way home. Thanks though. Now I just need to figure out why my trip B resets. I have trip A to reset on a gas refill, but I don't know why/when trip B resets.

My God, HKS, what'd you do to get that kind of mileage? Drop your RL out of an airplane? :.)

BTW, I noticed your secondary display says "That Way". Makes me think it'd be kind of neat if it were a secondary display for the nav, too. Unless, of course, you were supposed to go This Way instead.

i had it on cruise control for about 70% of the drive up. I noticed the secondary display after i took the pic too. haha. Its actually the name of the song that was playing on XM. 707 on my secondary display kind of looks like a guy pointing to the left too. LOL!

How fast were you previously going that you're sitting in bumper to bumper traffic but your avg speed is 61. LUDICROUS SPEED...GO!!!!! is your RL plaid?

my 08 RL has the stock tires and it averages 24.8 with a heavy foot. Sometimes 25.

If I try to hypermile it does best doing about 55 mph and I can get it to average about 26.7 mpg but I've never really got it higher than that.

Can someone tell me how the top radio/cd display shows the text - is that RDS or MP3 player or something else?

Thanks!

Looks like you just filled up tho which resets the MPG. just seeing you got 398 miles left on your tank

I reset mine while driving once and then rolled to a stop sign. I momentarily had an average 81 mpg!

...then I accelerated away to my normal 22.

With the AC on, i average 19 MPG. This is 50% city/traffic.
Without the AC running, i may get 20-21MPG at best.

Freeway driving only, i get about 26-27mpg even if i do 80-85mph.

I have aftermarket 18" wheels and tires. I am pretty sure that they hurt the gas mileage compared to stock setup. Yet, i am truly not impressed with the gas mileage of the RL in city/traffic driving. The car is sluggish, it does not feel as it has 300hp, yet it burns gas like a V8.

I guess i should blame it on the AWD and 4000+lbs weight of the car.
